Cowlishaw: Why the NFL made the right call denying Cowboys' police-tribute decal request
By Tim Cowlishaw

Columnist Tim Cowlishaw recently held a chat to talk all things D-FW sports. Here are some highlights:

Should the NFL have let the Cowboys put a decal supporting the fallen Dallas officers on their helmets? How's that any different from all the NFL-approved pink we'll see some October?

Tim Cowlishaw: It's an unpopular opinion (not my first) but I think the NFL made the right call. There's a way to honor these men without a decal on the helmet. If you allow that, do you allow decals saying Black Lives Matter? Pro Life? Pro Choice? Repeal Obamacare? John 3:16? Where does it end? I think there's a place for protest and there's a place to honor victims in different ways. I understand the NFL's reluctance to open this door.

"Cowboys assistant Art Briles" -- what would you make of that?

Tim Cowlishaw: What would be the point? What exactly from his style of offense would he bring to the Cowboys? I don't think it makes a lot of sense for the team, and I don't think it's what Art is looking for, either. I think Art needs to adjust his timetable. It will be shocking if he lands a major college head coaching job for 2017. Can't imagine a president signing off on that without more information.

Does it matter that Ezekiel Elliott, a rookie running back who is the Cowboys' presumptive starter, won't be getting carries in the team's first preseason game?

Tim Cowlishaw: No but it matters that he can't practice at all out here. A rookie expected to perform such a major role has to get more work than he has gotten to this point. I think if he gets a total of 10 to 15 carries in the second and third preseason games, that's fine. But I've got to think he needs some practice in this offense as well.

What will you be focusing on when the Cowboys and Rams meet up Saturday?

Tim Cowlishaw: Trying to find players I have heard of on the field. Seriously, a lot of attention on Prescott, just what he looks like in an NFL offense trying to move a team rather than simply execute plays here on the practice field in Oxnard. Any one from the front four showing any sort of pass rush? Do these linebackers like Akunne and King and Nzeocha that look good in practice make plays in an NFL game?
