OXNARD, Calif. — On the first day of practice Sunday, Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray had an accessory attached to his helmet: A tiny, black video camera.
Immediately, the device sparked curiosity. What was it doing there? Was it being used for coaching purposes? And why was Murray the only player carrying the extra eye?
It turns out the equipment staff, led by Mike McCord and Bucky Buchanan, added the camera at the request of the Cowboys broadcasting department, and Murray volunteered to be the test subject. Eventually, a video showing Murray’s first-person perspective was posted on the team’s website Tuesday.
In the 117-second clip (which you can see here http://www.dallascowboys.com/multim...ay/261378a2-bceb-48fb-b5c4-facb3020995c#watch ), viewers can see what Murray sees, as he takes a handoff, catches a pass and makes a cut. When asked if it could be used as a teaching tool, running backs coach Gary Brown didn’t shoot down the question.
“That’s a good idea,” he said. “I may implement it. I like that. I have to see what it looks like when they show me the tape. If I think can help us, I’ll use it.”
