IRVING, Texas -- The number zero has been in the head of the Dallas Cowboys' defense this week.
The unit came up with zero takeaways in last week’s 17-16 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, and this week’s foe, the St. Louis Rams, are the only team not to allow a sack this season.
First the takeaways:
A week after piling up six turnovers (five by the defense) against the New York Giants, the Cowboys missed on two interceptions (Bruce Carter, Will Allen) against the Chiefs.
“We need to get the ball out,” linebacker Sean Lee said. “I think if we would’ve gotten one turnover last week I think we would’ve won that game so we have to find that way to get a turnover. We talk about it. That was depressing for us not to have a turnover and losing by one point and not being able to get off the field there that hit our pride pretty hard.”
Now the sacks:
The Cowboys have seven sacks in two games and have 26 quarterback pressures as well. Rams quarterback Sam Bradford has yet to go down. Dating back to last season, Bradford has not been sacked in St. Louis’ last four games. The last time he was sacked came in the third quarter of a Week 15 loss to the Minnesota Vikings when he was dropped by Chad Greenway.
Since then he has had 195 pass attempts without getting sacked.
He will not have right tackle Rodger Saffold this week because of an injury, which could make things dicey.
“If you look at their scheme you know why,” said defensive tackle Jason Hatcher of the Rams’ ability to protect Bradford. “They double-team a lot. They chip and there’s quick passes. It’s real hard to get to the quarterback. It’s not they’re just blocking people. It’s their scheme. It’s very efficient. It’s very good. They’re very good at what they do.”
