Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo continues to make progress from the fractured vertebrae he suffered in his back in the third preseason game and is on target to play in Week 7, Jason LaCanfora of CBS Sports reports. He was given a 6-10 week timeline when he suffered the initial injury, which is unrelated to his previous back issues, and he and the team are confident he can return after their Week 6 bye, sources said.
Romo should be cleared for further physical activity in another week and intends to travel with the Cowboys while rehabbing from the injury (another indication his back is improving, as air travel, even on a luxury charter flight, can be difficult). He is getting treatment around the clock, including the use of a hyperbaric chamber, and the Cowboys remain fully committed to him as their starter while promising rookie Dak Prescott takes over in a caretaker role.
The team declined to put Romo on IR (with a designation to return) because that would have precluded him from playing for at least eight weeks. In what the Cowboys expect to be a tight NFC East race, the possibility of having him healthy in Week 7, yet unable to play because of the designation, is not something owner Jerry Jones wanted to risk, sources said.
