We’re all starting to wonder why the Cowboys haven’t finalized their coaching staff just yet. There are lots of guys out there and there have been several interviews. But for some reason, the Cowboys haven’t filled up all their spots.
Currently, there is a defensive line position available, a wide receiver coach and possibly an assistant offensive line job as well. And who knows if the Cowboys might consider making a few other changes to the staff. Jerry Jones hinted there might be some other changes when asked last week at the Senior Bowl.
So one reason for the delay might have been the desire not to trump any Super Bowl news – not that a hiring of any assistant coach could really do that in the first place. But the Cowboys didn’t have any problems announcing on Monday that Matt Eberflus would be linebackers coach.
So maybe there are things that need to take place first. For instance, what about Wednesday’s National Signing Day? That’s when all of these high school football players will official sign college letters of intent. It’s become a huge deal in recruiting.
Possibly, there could be a college assistant coach out there who has decided to take a job but is waiting until recruiting is over before announcing the move. Some of these assistants have close relationships with their recruits and any news like that might trigger some last-second moves.
So let’s keep an eye on that.
Also, there’s a chance Green Bay and Pittsburgh has a few coaches on staff that might pique the Cowboys’ interest. Teams are not allowed to interview coaches on teams still in the playoffs.
So while Jerry Jones said there is no timetable in finalizing a staff, we might see some changes, either by Thursday or next Monday.
