Concern with replacement officials? Cowboys coach Jason Garrett says, “really not at all.”
By David Moore / Reporter

Replacement officials will work Wednesday night’s opener between the Cowboys and world champion New York Giants.

Does that concern Jason Garrett?

“Really not at all,” the Cowboys head coach said. “The NFL does a great job of putting a great product out there for us and we’re just going to go play. It’s our job to play and coach.

“The officials are going to be fine. I think they did a good job during the pre-season.”

Garrett smiled when asked if that meant he and his staff won’t disagree with any of the calls made on Wednesday.

“I think we’ll probably have a similar relationship that we have with the regular officials,” Garrett said.

Officials breakdown: Jim Core
September, 3, 2012
By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas – Barring a last-minute and unforeseen agreement between the league and the officials, the Cowboys’ season opener against the New York Giants will feature replacement officials, led by referee Jim Core.

The most interesting fact from the league’s selection of Core is that he will not be working the Cowboys-Giants game with the crew that accompanied him in three preseason contests. Core worked three preseason games and his crew had 39 accepted penalties for 333 yards.

He will be joined by umpire Bob Shoulders, head linesman Greg Maxwell, line judge Joshua Thurow, field judge Thaddious Foster, side judge Brian Stropolo and back judge Larry Babcock. They worked the final week of the preseason with Jim Winterberg in calling the Carolina-Pittsburgh game.

Is Jason Garrett concerned about the replacement officials?

“Really not at all,” Garrett said. “The NFL does a great job of putting a great product out there for us and we’re just going to play.
It’s our job to play and coach and the officials are going to be fine.
I think they did a good job in the preseason and we’re just excited to do our part on Wednesday night.”

So does that mean he will agree with every call?

“I think we’ll probably have a similar relationship that we have with the regular officials,” Garrett joked.

The Winterberg crew had 16 accepted penalties for 136 yards in the Carolina-Pittsburgh game. Overall the crew threw 18 flags, including six special teams’ penalties.

Core is the activities director at Sawtooth Middle School in Meridian, Idaho, according to this story. He has called games in the Frontier League as well as arenafootball2.

Here is the breakdown of penalties from Core’s last game between Tampa Bay and Washington:

Ineligible man downfield – 1
Offensive holding – 3
False start – 5
Defensive pass interference – 2

Here is the breakdown of penalties from the rest of his crew that worked the Pittsburgh-Carolina game:

Roughing the passer – 1
Illegal formation – 1
Offensive holding – 4
False start – 2
Illegal block above the waist – 3
Offside – 1
Personal foul – 1
Defensive pass interference – 2
Face mask – 1
Delay of game – 2

Either they were ordered by the league to say nice things about the faux refs or this team never worries about anything.

I think Garrett does a poor job of working the refs during games. I worry about Coughlin getting in their ears and getting the favorable calls. Make no doubt about it. The rent a refs will impact this game and it will make national news.

It's just what else are you going to say as a head coach at this point?

It would have been extremely foolish for Garrett to say something inflammatory. That's just asking for bad calls to go your way. Nope, say you have confidence in these guys, tell them that before the game, and hope you have a great game.

Well, judging by the swift reaction of the league recently to adverse comments on the officials. I think NFL teams have been brow-beaten into saying nothing but nice things about them.

Plus you want to do everything within your power to win the football game, which is...don't piss off the refs pre-game.

yeah I dont see him complaining much, but Parcells was never one to shy away from working the refs, and we got hosed just as much then

its gone on for years, it'll go on regardless of who coaches here

Watch us get the bad end of a horrible call somewhere costing us points late and the game. Then it will be used as leverage to get the replacement refs run out of town...

Meanwhile everyone will tell Dallas to get over it, it happens and that kind of thing.

actually they wont do anything about it unless it happens to the Giants instead...then it'll be that we got lucky and the benefit of the bad officiating, and the Giants only lost because they got hosed and something must be done

I'll take it.

I don't care if they accidentally gives five downs from the goaline down 6.
