The Cowboys have done a fair job of covering their draft plans, not by subterfuge, but through abundance. Where last year attention was focused on one player, USC's Tyron Smith, this year multiple players have gotten attention. Let's follow the bouncing target. At various points Melvin Ingram, Courtney Upshaw, Dontari Poe, Janoris Jenkins and Dre Kirkpatrick had the buzz. Lately, attention has moved to the "big four" of Cox, Barron, Brockers and DeCastro.
Today, the Valley Ranch smokescreen gets thicker. In addition to the regulars, Cordy Glenn, an old name from the immediate post-Combine churn, has resurfaced. So has Dont'a Hightower's; one scribe says he would be the target if Dallas moved down.
I can't see it. Dallas could move down into the 18 range, and San Diego has long been kicked around as a target, but that would likely keep DeCastro in play. I don't see the Eagles or Jets taking him, though Cincinnait could at 17. Brockers might also be there, if the Eagles don't take him at 15, or if they move up and select Fletcher Cox.
As I see it, Glenn and Hightower would be the fall-backs, if Dallas dropped, and all of the top tier of Cox, Barron, Brockers and DeCastro were gone. I think these names are leaked to help set expectations, in the event the team does trade out of 14.
But who knows. By mid-afternoon, I expect to hear that Dre Kirkpatrick and Dontari Poe are back in consideration.
The U.S.S. Jerry is laying smoke this morning, thicker and blacker than before.
