INDIANAPOLIS – For the last two seasons hamstring injuries have prevented Miles Austin from being Miles Austin and as a result the Cowboys are looking at ways to keep the wide receiver healthy in 2013.

“We’ve had a lot of discussions about Miles and it’s a very comprehensive discussion,” coach Jason Garrett said.

Garrett reiterated Friday what he said during the season about hydration being a big part of injury prevention, and he added the coaches need to protect Austin from himself during the week.

Austin was limited to 10 games in 2011 but played in every game in 2012 after sitting out four preseasons with a hamstring pull. He caught 66 passes for 943 yards and was second to Dez Bryant with six touchdown catches but he had only two 100-yard games on the season.

Austin is scheduled to count $8.3 million against the cap in 2013, and his future has been speculated about outside of the organization this offseason.

“We certainly feel great about Miles and the only issue we’ve had with Miles is simply health,” Garrett said. “I was really proud of him last year because he wasn’t healthy and he wasn’t healthy the whole year. I saw a really good burst from him maybe about twice and he still caught 66 or so balls and was a productive player; did it a little different than we’ve seen him but was productive. It’s really important we get him healthy and get him going like he’s capable of.”

Cowboys would save $3.6 million against their salary cap if they released WR Miles Austin. The team is roughly $18 million over the cap.

wonder what motivated this tweet just now.

It wouldn't be popular, but I wouldn't be against using, say, a second on a WR for the right player. They're too important in today's game. And Miles is brittle, Dez a headcase, and nobody else is that talented.

Greg Jennings is a free agent, his favorite coach by some accounts is Jimmy Robinson, who is still in our organization.

Some are saying due to injury issues the past couple seasons he might not be the hot commodity on the free agent market that he was originally thought to be.

Yeah he is impressive. We'd have quite the 1-2 duo with him and Dez.

On another note, love the way Bray zings alot of those throws too.

nickeatman Jerry Jones said Miles Austin is in the Cowboys' plans for 2013. But it sounds like changes in his contract will be made to help cap. 14 minutes ago · reply · retweet · favorite
