Cowboys' young QBs have Jerry Jones not thinking about veteran backup

OXNARD, Calif. -- The Dallas Cowboys continue to be in a holding pattern when it comes to their attempt to find a veteran backup to Tony Romo.
After Sunday's performances by Dak Prescott and Jameill Showers in practice, owner and general manager Jerry Jones does not find himself in more of a rush to add a quarterback.
"I'm really more encouraged after this about holding our pat hand on a veteran quarterback than before," Jones said. "If we continue to see this kind of improvement and see this kind of instinctive [play] and really look very comfortable, if we can see this that will give us some running room out there."
After losing backup Kellen Moore for 3-4 months because of a broken right fibula on Aug. 2, the Cowboys made a play to sign Nick Foles, who joined the Kansas City Chiefs. They also had talks with the Cleveland Browns about veteran Josh McCown in a trade but nothing developed.
The Cowboys have since focused on the development of Prescott and/or Showers after not wanting to overpay in terms of draft-pick compensation or otherwise.
Prescott went nine of 12 in team and 7-on-7 drills. Showers completed seven of 10 passes Sunday. With Tony Romo not practicing every day in camp, that has allowed Prescott to get first-team snaps in his absence and Showers some second-team work.
The Cowboys open the preseason Aug. 13 against the Los Angeles Rams and traditionally Romo has not played in the first preseason game.
"It will be good for everybody to see them get a lot of work down at the Coliseum," Jones said of Prescott and Showers.
