I am fine with this. Lets see how the transition works out before committing long term money.

Anthony Spencer will play for the franchise tag

The deadline for franchise tag players to sign new contracts is 3 p.m. CT today.

According to a source the Cowboys won't get a new deal worked out with defensive end Anthony Spencer by the deadline, as expected. The Cowboys and Spencer's agent, Jordan Woy, had worked on a new deal for most of the summer but suspended talks in late June.

Spencer will be paid $10.6 million this season.

But Spencer isn't the only player participating under the franchise tag: Bills safety Jairus Byrd, Chiefs left tackle Brendan Albert, Bengals defensive end Michael Johnson, Colts punter Pat McAfee, Bears defensive tackle Henry Melton and Dolphins defensive tackle Randy Starks are the others.

Byrd is the only player who hasn't signed his one-year deal.

Yeah, maybe it is best to see how Spencer performs in the new scheme before doing a new contract.

Agreed no new contract.

Let him play out the year, then draft or sign a younger replacement.

Well run teams let quality aging players go instead of giving them big money. See Patriots:Welker or Eagles:Dawkins for examples.

Sounds like we've got people who can potentially take his place - Wilbur or Crawford. We need to let him walk after this year.

I'd rather keep Hatcher than Spencer. I think we can re-sign Hatcher for cheap, give him a 2-year deal.

Hatcher isn't signing for cheap. I wouldn't be surprised if 3/4th of the D Line starters are new next year.

2013 Projected starting D-Line:

LDE Anthony Spencer $10.327M cap hit
LDT Jay Ratliff $4.072M cap hit
RDT Jason Hatcher $2.6M cap hit
RDE DeMarcus Ware $8.09375M cap hit

2014
LDE Anthony Spencer, Age 30, Unsigned and Franchise tagged two years in a row.
LDT Jay Ratliff, Age 32, $8.232M cap hit
RDT Jason Hatcher, Age 32, Unsigned
RDE DeMarcus Ware, Age 31, $16.00375M cap hit

Tyrone Crawford's 2014 cap hit is $733,813 and Sean Lissemore's is $1.4M. I expect Jerry to talk those 2 up next off-season whether they have earned it or not.

I mean, could you imagine how bad this team would be if we had taken Merriman over Ware back in the day?

A 4-3 D-Line full of 30 year olds, not exactly the attacking Tampa 2 I envisioned when we first made the change.

Jerry and Monte, old guys rock.

We have to get two of them from Free Agency because we must save our draft picks for cornerback, tight end, linebacker, and wide receiver.
