Anthony Spencer on return: We’re getting close

Posted by Josh Alper on August 4, 2014, 9:02 AM EDT

The Cowboys need all the help they can get on the defensive line and defensive end Anthony Spencer says that his rehab from microfracture surgery is progressing well enough that he hopes to provide some soon.

Spencer started camp on the PUP list after missing all but one game last season and has been doing agility work on the side while the rest of his teammates go through practice. Spencer isn’t making any guarantees about being ready for the start of the regular season because he doesn’t want “to push it too much,” but he is feeling like he’ll be capable of doing more in the near future.

“I would think we would soon start working against some other linemen, going through bags, doing individual drills,” Spencer said, via the Dallas Morning News. “We’re getting close.”

Spencer’s return would be very welcome on a Dallas defense that has already lost linebacker Sean Lee for the season and rookie defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence for the next few months. He doesn’t have a lot of experience as a defensive end in the 4-3 system the Cowboys installed last season, which may lead to some growing pains that the Cowboys will gladly accept if it means getting a veteran player back on the field to solidify a reeling defense.
