Starting defensive end Marcus Spears and backup offensive tackle Alex Barron were both injured near the end of the Dallas Cowboys' practice on Thursday afternoon at the Alamodome.

Spears incurred the potentially more serious injury. After stopping a running play, he limped away from pile with what the club thinks could be a sprained ligament in the left knee. He was scheduled to undergo an MRI test in the evening to determine the extent of the injury.

If Spears has a sprained ligmament, he would be out from four to six weeks, putting his status for the season opener in doubt. The Cowboys open at Washington on Sept. 12.

Barron came out because of a dislocated pinky finger. If the injury does not require surgery, Barron could play with it.

Both injuries came near the end of practice. Earlier in camp, rookie wide receiver Dez Bryant incurred a high left ankle sprain on the next-to-last play of practice. That caused owner Jerry Jones to question the workload for Bryant and the pace of practices.

Marcus Spears is out 4-6 Weeks and Alex Barron injures left Hand

Marcus Spears will be out 4-6 weeks after hurting his knee at the last full practice.

Spears was not wearing the protective knee braces that both Jimmy Johnson and Bill Parcells required for linemen during practices and preseason games.

Jason Hatcher is the immediate back up.

The Cowboys just can't catch a break at the end of these practices. First Dez Bryant suffered a high ankle sprain on July 30, now Marcus Spears and Alex Barron get injured just before the final whistle blew Thursday.

In addition to Spears' knee injury, Barron -- the second-team left tackle -- injured his left hand. The Cowboys have not disclosed details, but it could be a dislocated left pinky as has been suggested.

Although Barron currently is behind Doug Free on the depth chart, he'd at least have a prominent role as the backup swing tackle. Sources close to the team have been impressed with Barron's production in practice, putting it on par with Free's.

Behind Barron are unproven tackles, including sixth-rounder Sam Young and last year's third-rounder Robert Brewster, who missed all of last season with a torn pectoral muscle.

I don't think Spears is that valuable, as to suggest we go nowhere without him.

That said, he's a valuable player and we're certainly better with him.

The good news (if any) to come from this is it'll allow the team to sort out the depth at DE. We have some young talent that needs to be sorted out.

Yeah, it's pretty much Bowen or Hatcher.
