27. Dallas Cowboys (5)

2012 Run Block Rankings: 7, 22
2012 Pass Block Rankings: 25, 11

LT: Tyron Smith
LG: Nate Livings
C: Travis Frederick*
RG: Mackenzy Bernadeau
RT: Doug Free
Super Sub: OT Jermey Parnell

Overview: Game watchers know Tony Romo played last season under constant siege. Because Romo is such an extraordinary pocket manipulator with instinctive feel for the pass rush, Dallas managed to rank a middling 16th in the league in sacks allowed (36) despite genuinely poor line play. They were 30th in yards-per-carry average (3.56). Free is the most overpaid offensive lineman in football and could lose his job to Parnell, if he doesn't lose his roster spot altogether. Bernadeau has never been an effective blocker, forming one of the league's worst right sides. Smith is an immense talent, but was a disappointment in his first year on the blindside. Lone new face Frederick was an obvious reach in the first round. At best, this was a well below-average line in 2012 and there is little or no reason to think it made significant offseason gains.

Yikes.

Top 3 by the way:
1. Patriots
2. 49ers
3. Broncos

Eh. Disagree that theres no reason to think we'll be improved.

Frederick helps out a lot. Ads much needed size, strength, and the ability to anchor. Also very smart.

I want to be optomistic and say Bernadeau will be better this year. He had surgery last offseason and missed early parts of camp, but played better as the year wore on.

Free/Parnell is a glaring weakness.

And Livings is garbage, IMO.

But I think the C is really improved. I'm hoping RG will be improved.

Frederick, despite whatever round he should have been drafted in, is by far an upgrade at Center. Tyron should improve at Left Tackle. The other 3 positions plus the likely 5 back-up's are pure garbage though. Cook might qualify as decent depth.

Last year was a perfect storm of dreadfulness for the OL. It is difficult to imagine a worse set of circumstances. Marginal talent at most positions, a string of injuries, absolutely zero continuity, etc. Just about everything that could go wrong, did go wrong. It was chaotic. Heck, Cook was starting at center a day or two after joining the team ....

I think the OL is bound to be somewhat better next season, if only because it is unlikely that things could go so wrong in two consecutive years.

Eh. 2013 rankings before we've even seen 1) any play from them 2) who they actually will be

If Bernadeau and Free are back on the right side, there's no question that's a big problem. I think Frederick will be a substantial upgrade in the middle and Smith will be good at LT. Livings was NOT as bad as some act like here, although his play dropped off badly the last 3 or 4 games of the season. The first 3/4 of the season he was decent and he has supposedly remade his body this offseason and now weighs in at 317lbs. He could be improved this year. Although my opinion with him is he would be cut if he wasn't a starter.

I still think its possible both Free and Bernadeau are replaced though.
