Horn: Michael Irvin trusts Troy Aikman in the pocket, Tony Romo outside it

I thought they bonded when Troy went to Jimmy's house to look at tropical fish or something. And what's the briefcase anecdote all about?

Horn: Michael Irvin trusts Troy Aikman in the pocket, Tony Romo outside it

Fumbling at the goal line and throwing a hideous INT to Revis were more damaging than a rookie missing a block on the punt squad. Unlike the rookie, Tony should have known better. As for Detroit, Tony had two pick sixes and a third pick that set up the Lions in Dallas territory. I'm not...

Troy was not happy before the Chicago playoff game in 1991. Seems like relations with the coaching staff were still strained. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Fam0U4QKXA

Horn: Michael Irvin trusts Troy Aikman in the pocket, Tony Romo outside it

As dbair noted, we acknowledge that he was guilty of having bad games. That's not the same as choking away a sure win. I remember him throwing a game-ending pick vs the Bills in 1993 (minus Emmitt) when we were already in FG range to tie the game. He got greedy and paid for it.

Punk called him a "bus driver" yesterday, a term usually reserved for guys like Dilfer or Hostetler. Ludicrous.

At one point he was 11-1 as a starter in the playoffs. And that wasn't accomplished by handing off to Emmitt all the time.

Not sure why the 1991 reg season game at Detroit is relevant. We're talking about pissing away a sure win, like Romo did vs the Lions and Jets last season. Conversely, the 1991 game was tied at halftime and was never in the bag for Dallas.

Did you just imply that Aikman was a mere "bus driver"? Newsflash: we don't win three Super Bowls with Walsh or Beuerlein under center.

Not at all. He's just saying that Romo does certain things better, just as Quincy did certain things better than White or Meredith. If I observed that Steve Young had a better arm than Joe Montana, that's hardly calling him a better overall QB.

Troy Aikman: Cowboys' Tony Romo 'already a better quarterback than I was'

The problem is that you overrate the talent Troy had to work with (esp early and late in his career) while underrating Tony's supporting cast. Free agency and the salary cap really hamstrung the offense in the mid-1990s, resulting in the loss of stalwarts like Stepnoski and Gogan. Big E's knee...

Troy Aikman: Cowboys' Tony Romo 'already a better quarterback than I was'

Aikman couldn't move around in 1991? Nonsense. He wasn't nearly a Bledsoe-like statue at that stage, yet he was sacked 32 times that year (a year that ended early for him before Thanksgiving). I've already conceded that Romo's mobility/agility were superior to Troy's, but so was Quincy's. Big deal.

Don't you mean "Romo haters"? That's usually the low-blow Tony's admirers resort to when they're losing an argument. BTW, has Tony ever been sacked 11 times in one game, as Troy was in 1991--a year when Emmitt won the rushing title behind that so-called "great" offensive line?

To whom are you referring? Gurode and Colombo are still active. Kosier just got released, but I'm sure someone will pick him up. Flo played last year and is a FA.

Troy Aikman: Cowboys' Tony Romo 'already a better quarterback than I was'

Switzer was just a figurehead. A novice to the pro game, he wisely let the assistant coaches run the show. Galloway didn't dub him "Insignificant Sideline Personnel" for nothing. I don't care for Garrett at all, but he's a lot closer to a real head coach than Switzer ever was.

Troy Aikman: Cowboys' Tony Romo 'already a better quarterback than I was'

But if Staubach and Aikman were in their prime in 2012, and also had the advantage of the same off-season programs and conditioning, why couldn't they be better than Romo?

On the contrary. Who better to compare the two quarterbacks than fans old enough to remember Aikman's career from start to finish?
