IRVING, Texas -- In the loss to the Detroit Lions on Sunday, the Dallas Cowboys were flagged just twice. The second penalty was the biggest, a holding call on left tackle Tyron Smith late in the fourth quarter.

With the Cowboys trying to close out the game, running back Phillip Tanner broke outside for a run, instead of inside, it forced Smith to block defensive end Devin Taylor a little longer than usual.

Smith was flagged for holding.

"It was a tug," Smith said. "It's a technique issue, but I have to clean up that mistake and make sure it doesn't happen again."

The penalty was declined by the Lions and instead of a fourth and long setting up a field goal of nearly 55 yards, the Cowboys were faced with a 44-yard field goal attempt by Dan Bailey. Bailey made the 44 yarder to push the Cowboys' lead to 30-24.

Smith has moved on from the holding call and has to do so without veteran guard Brian Waters who turned into a mentor for several of the young players on the line.

Waters is out for the season with a triceps injury.

"He's a pretty good leader on our line," Smith said. "He's still around to give us some tips and everything to help us out as much as we can."

Yeah, I'd rather have JJ Watt but since we fucked up drafting lineman for years and years we had to take Smith.

I swear to God that play lost the game for us, just like Ware jumping offsides in San Diego and Williams extending his arms and fumbling in San Francisco.

This is a poorly coached team.

I didn't post back during the Smith draft, but how many people really were on the Watt train. To be honest, I wanted nothing to do with him. I was afraid he had Spears written all over him. Also I'm not convinced he isn't on HGH.

Smith is our 3rd best lineman. That's sad. He's a top 10 pick.

Bob, this is one of the dumbest things I've read in quite some time. That's really saying something considering I read most of your posts every day too. Props dude.

Frederick and Free grade higher than Tyron. A couple of weeks ago Tyron was PFFs 22nd rated tackle in pass blocking efficiency.

Total dud.

That same PFF that has DeCastro as the #3 OG in the league, and whom you swore was a bust?

The same PFF that said Nate Livings was like a top 6 or 8 G last yr? Same website?

Tyron Smith has been really good this yr, I don't know what games you are watching. He hardly lets anyone near Romo and has done a nice job run blocking.

Smith was the correct choice at the time. That's where poor drafting bites you.

Watt has to be on something. He'll burn out or get busted.
