Long-term deal looks unlikely for Spencer

IRVING, Texas -- After reviewing Dallas Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones' comments about Anthony Spencer on Thursday afternoon, it leaves me to believe a deal won't get done for the defensive end before July 15.

That date is the deadline for any NFL team who has franchised a player to finalize a long-term contract.

“There’s nothing here that’s not on the up and up and friendly,” Jones said Thursday. “If it works out, it works out. We’d love to have Spencer here, but we also understand it has got to work for him, too.”

Spencer is franchised at $10.6 million.

Here's what Spencer said on Wednesday regarding a new deal: "I told (my agent, Jordan Woy) to contact me when they get it done. He talked to me about the numbers, but we're just not on the same page right now. If we get close, we can get it done. If not, we won't. I'm not too worried about it."

The Cowboys have $9.7 million in salary-cap space available for signings, which also includes the unsigned draft picks.

At this stage, it seems the Cowboys are willing to let Spencer keep his $10.6 million and play the season out. If Spencer has a solid season, then he'll hit the open market and the Cowboys will enter a bidding war for his services with other NFL teams.

The Cowboys have young backups Sean Lissemore and Kyle Wilber who could take over at end if necessary. The Cowboys didn't draft a defensive end in the draft, but you must believe the franchise will address the position in 2014.

Spencer is a good player, but not elite, and given what the Cowboys are willing or not willing to pay him, it appears he will hit the open market.

“Obviously we have to take a look at what people signed for and what they’ll make going forward,” Jones said. “There’s some good football players that what they got paid might affect what we want to pay Anthony going forward.”

Let him walk. Somebody will overpay, and I'd prefer it wasn't us.

I'll take a 3rd-4th round comp pick along with the cap room and be happy.

Agreed. Even if he notches 10-12 sacks this coming year. We need to let him go.

Good teams let aging, still productive players walk. See Patriots and Wes Welker, or Eagles and Brian Dawkins for two examples.

I can't remember the last time we made the right decision in letting someone walk.

I'm totally fine with this.

If the idea of not extending Spencer is because they are looking to Lee and Bryant... all the better. I'd be beyond pissed that we would have to let either one or Lord forbid, both of those guys walk, because we wanted to keep Spencer.

Except that we basically overpaid on leasing him the last 2 years. Should have let him walk last year. Paying him $19M this year and last is ridiculously stupid. Could have signed 3 players with that cap room.

Yep. Probalem with this team: they keep players at least a year too long. Adams is a prime example. He should have been cut, a year before we pulled the trigger on him. That way, we would have had two years of watching Free, and know if he was the real deal before giving him that monster contract.

Whatever dood. We haven't been restricted by our cap situation at all. Ever.

It's beyond retarded. Instead of having a young guy on a rookie deal going into the make or break year for him; we have to start from scratch if Spencer leaves.

Or pay a 30 year old player 7-8 mil a year, or more, to stay on in his declining years.

We can't do that because we have Jerry and Stephen talking about how we've got a chance to win a Championship going into every year. They refuse to bite the bullet and let a young guy get in there and play.

That, and we had noone behind Spencer.

Exactly.

I hope we're smart enough to do this.

Next offseason is going to be interesting. You've got some major guys who have contracts coming up in the next couple of years: Dez, Lee and Murray.

Then, next year, you have both Spencer and Hatcher as free agents. I mean, what is the long term plan there? Cross your fingers that Sean Lissemore and Crawford can become starters?

He played damn good last year. After Ware was so injured and beat up, he was probably our best defensive player most of the season.

Have no idea how he'll do this yr, but if its similar to last year then the right decision was made.

And having 3 extra Mackenzy Bernardeau's, Nate Livings and Lawrence Vickers isn't better than having one really good player.

I'm of the mind that most here are thinking that you let him walk while he's still productive. Someone else will overpay him for the skills he has left, and then get robbed for the money they are giving him when he's a shell of what he once was. I'm pretty sure we've seen Spencer's best.

It will be all downhill after this year.

Well 1st off, you don't re-sign Demarco Murray.

A go-to RB is a thing of the past; not to mention they are a dime a dozen AND Murray has health issues.
