What moving Stephen Hodge to reserve/PUP means

One of the moves the Cowboys will make to reach the 75-man limit on Tuesday is to move linebacker Stephen Hodge from the active/physically unable to perform list to the reserve/PUP list.
What does it mean?
It frees up a roster spot for the Cowboys and it means Hodge will miss at least the first six weeks of the regular season. The Cowboys will then have a two-week window to look at Hodge in practice before deciding to move him up to the 53-man roster, release him or put him on injured reserve.
Hodge missed his rookie year after undergoing microfracture surgery on his left knee. He has spent the last year rehabbing and has not been cleared for full action. He has gone through resistance training for most of the off-season but the delicate nature of the surgery requires time. The Cowboys have had success in bringing back Kevin Hardy and Al Johnson from similar surgeries.
Hodge was drafted in the sixth round in 2009 out of TCU and was moved from safety to linebacker. The team was hoping he could become a special teams' standout but the knee injury has slowed his progress.
