Cowboys lose Jesse Holley, Victor Butler

OXNARD, Calif. -- Coach Wade Phillips said the injuries aren't serious, but fast-improving wide receiver Jesse Holley and outside linebacker Victor Butler will miss the afternoon practice on Sunday.

Holley strained his right hamstring in the morning session and "may miss a few days," according to Phillips. Butler has a neck strain, also suffered in the morning practice.

"These are real minor injuries," Phillips said. "They should be back quickly."

*With the Cowboys signing tight end Jason Pociask, it takes a little pressure off fellow tight end Jason Witten. The Cowboys have just two healthy tight ends, Jason Witten and DajLeon Farr. Phillips said Sunday morning's practice was a tough one for Farr because he was eaten up by Anthony Spencer.

Witten is getting reps with the first- and second-team units with the lack of depth at the position. Adding Pociask should curtail Witten's reps.

"We need to watch it with Witten a little bit," Phillips said. "He doesn't need to overdo it just because we have a shortage. We've talked about that offensively and make sure Witten gets his reps but he doesn't need everybody else's reps, and we know that."

*Phillips said he was pleased with the tempo of the morning practice and the team is finding its groove and settling into the second version of training camp.

"We need to continue that this afternoon and going forward on to this next ballgame," Phillips said. "Our attitude is good and I think our players work hard and they do what you ask them to do, so that's where we are right now."

*Phillips confirmed tight end Martellus Bennett will return to practice in the afternoon. He will be limited. Bennett ran some cuts and pushed off his legs, a good sign for him to return.

*Akwasi Owusu-Ansah will return kicks and punts in the San Diego game on August 21. Phillips likes how Owusu-Ansah is being aggressive.

"Good practice," Phillips said of Owusu-Ansah's morning. "Pretty physical. He can move, change direction those kinds of things. I thought it was a good sign."
