Cowboys release cornerback Tyler Patmon
5:29 PM ET

Todd ArcherESPN Staff Writer

IRVING, Texas -- For the second time this season, cornerback Tyler Patmon fell out of favor with the Dallas Cowboys' coaching staff. Only this time, it cost him a roster spot.

Patmon was released Tuesday for what sources call performance issues. He opened the season as the Cowboys’ nickel cornerback after Dallas lost Orlando Scandrick for the season in training camp with a knee injury, but Patmon lost the job after five games.

He regained the job three weeks later, only to lose it after Sunday’s loss to the Green Bay Packers.

Making the decision more curious is the health of cornerback Morris Claiborne. He was not at the portion of practice open to the media on Tuesday after straining a hamstring against the Packers. He missed two games earlier this season with hamstring and ankle injuries, but head coach Jason Garrett said Monday that they don’t believe this strain is as severe.

Byron Jones would be the natural pick to take over as the nickel corner for the final three games while continuing to start at free safety. The only other healthy cornerbacks on the roster are Brandon Carr and Deji Olatoye. Terrance Mitchell was added to the practice squad on Dec. 2.

Claiborne wasn’t the only starter missing from the portion of practice open to the media.

Linebacker Rolando McClain went through the walkthrough, according to Garrett, but he did not practice after suffering a concussion against Green Bay. Garrett said McClain is “doing well.” Defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence was also missing from practice.

Source: CB Tyler Patmon cut because not physical enough as nickel corner. Club intends to call up Terrance Mitchell from practice squad.

Odd how back in August a lot of speculation was that Patmon and White could play significant roles in our secondary for years to come... .now both are gone.

Can't ever believe anything that comes out of Jerry's and these coaches' mouths when it comes to evaluating players.

Really? So how are Devin Streets and TWilly still on the team?
Scapegoat was needed, to show how tough and disciplinarian they are, and they pretty much have to base any cut they make not on performance as the first consideration, but on how much dead money the cut player will represent against the salary cap. This is also why Claiborne is still there - although idiots that Jerruh and Ginger are, they probably really believe he is worth a shit. Patmon "not physical enough" but at least he tried, Claiborne avoids any physical contact at all if it's in any way possible.

Yeah, wasn't Patmon the new Rhonde Barber? :lol

I can't wait to hear how "some in the building" never believed in him, like there were once again big differences between the coaches and the scouts. Seems like that happens with every cut. There are so many people in this organization playing CYA, it's sickening.

Never heard the Barber comparisons, but there was a number of Scandrick comparisons.

On any defense in the NFL, effective CBs are arguably the most difficult to find and replace. Now Dallas has cut two when the defense and especially that position on the defense needed them desperately. Meanwhile the guys who are supposed to be the wheels on the Cowboy bus taking us downfield have low tire pressure, no tread and inhibits the bus from getting anywhere. It's a lousy pass offense but at least replacing the dopes who aren't doing anything makes more sense than releasing players who get involved every game at least.

This is why you can't ever listen to the media after a good season. They're always hyping up our players like we're so deep at certain positions. This past offseason being one of them. All we read was how deep we were at corner. Now both White and Patmon straight up cut before the season is even over.

Seems like I even remember one of our esteemed posters yelling at us "negatives" who dared claim our secondary depth was lousy.

Supposedly anyone who watched a few minutes of DC.com camp vids could see how great it was.

I never understood the logic of fans to stand on the praise of the coaching staff or media in training camp.

Point me towards the reporters who ever said "This team looks horrible." They will have their credentials pulled, especially by megalomaniacs like Jerry. Look at the crap he is pulling now.

Also, show me the coach in training camp who said "Well, we screwed up this off-season. All these guys suck."

It never happens but every year you hear Zoners and dbairs say how the coaches love a guy and that the media is saying this guy is killing it in camp, and how that is proof that we will be great.
