IRVING, Texas -- For the second time this season, cornerback Tyler Patmon fell out of favor with the Dallas Cowboys' coaching staff. Only this time, it cost him a roster spot.
Patmon was released Tuesday for what sources call performance issues. He opened the season as the Cowboys’ nickel cornerback after Dallas lost Orlando Scandrick for the season in training camp with a knee injury, but Patmon lost the job after five games.
He regained the job three weeks later, only to lose it after Sunday’s loss to the Green Bay Packers.
Making the decision more curious is the health of cornerback Morris Claiborne. He was not at the portion of practice open to the media on Tuesday after straining a hamstring against the Packers. He missed two games earlier this season with hamstring and ankle injuries, but head coach Jason Garrett said Monday that they don’t believe this strain is as severe.
Byron Jones would be the natural pick to take over as the nickel corner for the final three games while continuing to start at free safety. The only other healthy cornerbacks on the roster are Brandon Carr and Deji Olatoye. Terrance Mitchell was added to the practice squad on Dec. 2.
Claiborne wasn’t the only starter missing from the portion of practice open to the media.
Linebacker Rolando McClain went through the walkthrough, according to Garrett, but he did not practice after suffering a concussion against Green Bay. Garrett said McClain is “doing well.” Defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence was also missing from practice.
