Third Gronkowski brother aims for NFL

01:16 AM CDT on Sunday, August 22, 2010

SAN DIEGO – Chris Gronkowski, an undrafted block-first fullback, continued his quest to make the Cowboys' opening day roster. He appeared in several plays during the first half as a lead blocker and played the entire second half.

If he makes it, the Gronkowskis will become the 25th family to have had three or more members on NFL rosters.

The Browners are the all-time leaders, with brothers Jim, Joey, Keith and Ross all reaching the NFL. The Baldingers, with Brian, Gary and Rich, are the last family to have had three brothers in the league at the same time.

New England took Rob Gronkowski, a tight end, in the second round of this year's draft. In two exhibition games, he has four catches for 38 yards and one touchdown. Dan Gronkowski, a seventh-round choice in 2009, had two catches for 31 yards at tight end in Detroit's first preseason game. Chris Gronkowski had one catch for 1 yard in the Cowboys' first two exhibitions.

There are two more Gronkowskis.

Big brother Gordon is a slugging first baseman in the independent Frontier League after spending three seasons in the Los Angeles Angels system. Youngest brother Williams is entering his senior year of high school and is a highly recruited wide receiver.

And then there is great-grandfather Ignatius Gronkowski. He competed with in the 1924 Summer Olympics at Paris as a cyclist with the American team.
