The founding fathers understood this problem better than anyone. They understood that man himself is flawed and therefore, men had to be protected from themselves. Notice in every socialist system that is tried, there is always a ruling class. And invariably, the class turns oppressive. Because it has to to enforce the system. Socialism is a forced participation system. Someone has to force everyone else to play along. Anyone that refuses to participate has to be forced back into line - or removed from the system so no one else gets the same idea. There can be no fair election because the possibility that the majority may vote away the socialist system is too high.
Go back and read Orwell's 1984. At the end of the book it is explained what this whole big brother system is really all about. It is not about some devotion to a system where a society works together for the benefit of everyone. It's about a system where everyone works to support the ruling class which always enjoys more wealth and privilege than the simple workers.
Look at Cuba. Fidel Castro led a revolution to remove the crooked capitalists from the Cuban government, He promised to return the wealth to the people. After Cuba fell to the communists, Castro broke all his promises. He installed himself as ruler - and his henchmen as his ruling class - and gave the people nothing - not even freedom.
