Timing of Payton’s suspension complicates his free agency
Posted by Mike Florio on November 5, 2012, 2:24 PM EST

As the football-following world digests the news that Saints coach Sean Payton will, per Adam Schefter of ESPN, become a free agent after the 2012 season, Schefter adds an intriguing new twist that was previously omitted — and that definitely alters the timeline.

Because, as Schefter now points out, Payton’s suspension lasts until the Super Bowl, his free agency wouldn’t begin until early February, weeks after the normal head-coach hiring cycle has concluded.

Sure, some coaches have been hired after the Super Bowl, like when former Patriots defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel joined the Browns after Super Bowl XXXIX. But Crennel was interviewed before the Super Bowl; as to Payton, the process would be starting from scratch once the Super Bowl ends.

If multiple teams are interested in Payton, will they wait for Payton to finally become available? It would become a very high-stakes game of chicken, with any pursuit for Payton demanding a contingency plan that would entail lining up a fallback who very well would have no interest in waiting around until early February to find out whether he does or doesn’t have a job.

Though Schefter became a little adamant during Monday morning’s SportsCenter regarding the prospects of Cowboys owner Jerry Jones firing coach Jason Garrett and hiring Payton, a lot of things will have to happen before Payton becomes the next coach of the Cowboys.

More importantly, several things will have to not happen, as they relate to the Saints’ equally adamant belief that Payton will be the head coach of the team in 2013 and beyond. For starters, the Saints will have to be deemed unable to fix the flaw in the contract at any point during the next three months, which would allow the problem to be resolved weeks before anyone else could even talk to Payton.

Then there’s the strong visceral notion that Payton shouldn’t be able to profit from his suspension by joining a new team and writing his own ticket. Besides, if he wanted to make the jump to Dallas and coach the Cowboys, all he had to do was not sign the proposed extension in September 2011. But he signed the extension, which means he wants to stay with the Saints. And he included a term that allows him to leave if G.M. Mickey Loomis leaves. Since Loomis is there, why would Payton suddenly want to leave a franchise that has been squarely behind him despite conduct that was deemed sufficiently problematic to justify a one-year suspension?

Finally, don’t discount the league’s desire to work this out so that Payton stays in New Orleans. Regardless of where the blame should be placed, Saints fans will blame the league office for setting in motion the chain of events that ultimately could give the term “Free Sean Payton” a much different meaning.

That is a horribly written piece..holy fuck. They sound like they are tryin to convince themselves that Dallas won't get Payton.

How about this you dumb fuck, Florio? If Payton wanted to stay in NO so bad, why the fuck has he not already agreed to a new contract since?

Florio makes some good points here actually.

Whoever signs Payton is definitely going to have to privately collude with him. Benson is the only person with legal access to Payton right now through their mutual work with the Hornets. Saints probably still have the best shot at him.

The Payton situation is actually eerily similar to when the Mavs were gunning for Deron Williams.

Still, Gruden is available and he's a very good coach. He sank in Tampa bc he couldn't find a franchise QB. He would have that in Dallas and he'd do a lot to help Romo play better.

Reid has the same clock management issues as Ginger. I don't think he's much of an upgrade.

Jerry needs to stop and think before making decisions. The real question is "would any other team touch this guy if I fire/don't hire him?"

Ginger certainly wouldn't be in demand. Teams would be falling left and right over Payton just like they did with Harbaugh.

Some GMs are capable of going against the grain and finding diamonds in a coal field. Jerry is not capable of that. He needs to hire someone that we all know will be good. He did that with Jimmy and Parcells and it worked out well. Might not work 100% of the time (see: Gibbs, Joe), but it's really our only hope as fans.

Gruden's offense is notoriously difficult.

Are we going to replace our entire receiving corps when we hire him?

Keyshawn, Jurevicius (sp?) and McCardell don't strike me as geniuses.

If Jerry Porter's dumbass can be productive in a Gruden offense, I'm pretty sure that Dez can too.

I have little doubt that Jon Gruden would work wonders with this offense.

He might even smart to recognize the interior OL is garbage and suggest a fix there as well. Whereas Jason Garrett either agreed with the FO signing off on Livings/Bernadau or orchestrated it himself. Either way, huge fail.

Plus, I'd rather someone with some skins on the walls and some experience be the one to determine who exactly on this team sucks and who doesn't. There has been no offensive player development under Ginger.

Laurent Robinson and Fiammetta were pleasant surprises last year, but Robinson in particular was a gift from Norv Turner.

Austin, Romo and Witten were here before Ginger. All 8 other positions on offense are completely unsettled from the past 5 years still. I guess Smith will be a stud here, but he's still developing.

Think about that.

During his entire tenure running the offense, Ginger is responsible for adding just ONE above average starter. We can maybe stretch that and include Dez too, but neither addition plays consistently well yet.

Pathetic.

95 wins away from his first NBA title. Just a formality at this point.

lol Jon Gruden

What happens when Romo retires then? Gruden + this FO ='s another Quincy Carter manning the helm at QB.
