The Giants said they really missed having Kenny Phillips in the secondary on Sunday night.

They may have to get used to missing him. Coach Tom Coughlin said at his Monday press conference that Phillps suffered a sprained MCL. Coughlin called Phillips’ status week-to-week, which would put his status for Sunday’s home game against the Browns in serious doubt. Tackle David Diehl has missed the last two games with a sprained MCL of his own and the Giants can’t afford to rush Phillips now and then lose him for more time down the road.

It’s been a rough year for the Giants in terms of injuries to the secondary as all four starters and several backups have all been nicked up in addition to losing cornerback Terrell Thomas for the season before the preseason was in full swing. Stevie Brown filled in for the Giants on Sunday night and the team will be getting Tyler Sash back from suspension this week, good timing for a team that needs healthy bodies.

Coughlin also delivered some less than ideal news about wide receiver Hakeem Nicks. Nicks has missed the last two games thanks to a knee injury he picked up in Week Two. The team was still concerned about his recovery from a broken bone in his foot at that point, but their concern has shifted. Coughlin said, via Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News, that Nicks’ knee isn’t any better after missing the Eagles game, adding to the injury issues facing the 2-2 defending champs.
