ALBANY, N.Y. -- Already dealing with several injuries, the New York Giants watched promising wide receiver Hakeem Nicks hyperextend his right knee at the end of Tuesday afternoon's practice.

The wide receiver, practicing only once a day after offseason toe surgery, will undergo an MRI on Tuesday evening and be further examined Wednesday. A source said early indications are positive concerning Nicks' knee, but more will be known later. The team announced that his status might not be updated until Thursday morning.

Nicks appeared to injure his knee at the end of the afternoon practice and was able to walk under his own power before riding a cart from the field to the locker room.

The team did get some good news when an MRI exam revealed no new damage to Shaun O'Hara's swollen left ankle. The starting center left camp on Tuesday to travel to Manhattan to undergo an MRI and X-ray at the Hospital for Special Surgery. The team said O'Hara's swelling is a result of "a chronic condition in the joint, which is being treated to reduce the swelling and regain the mobility."

Also, wide receiver Mario Manningham sat out both practices with a groin issue. Tight end Travis Beckum did not practice with a sore hamstring and safety Kenny Phillips (knee) and guard Kevin Boothe (pectoral) are already on the physically unable-to-perform list in camp.

Injuries just keep piling up in the East.

I think the only team I haven't heard a lot from is Washington.

This kind of flies under the radar . . . but could be big news.

O'Hara has been a stalemate on that line for years, and that line has been one of the best in the NFL during that time. A 'chronic' condition to his ankle doesn't sound too promising.

Nicks' knee is "A-OK," Giants say
By Ralph Vacchiano

Ok, take a deep breath. The Giants dodged a bullet. Hakeem Nicks is “fine.”

That’s the official word from the team today after the 22-year-old underwent two MRIs and an examination down at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan. They said that the MRI results and the exam “showed nothing out of the ordinary. In other words, Nicks’ knee is fine.”

Nicks hyper-extended his right knee at the end of yesterday’s practice. He had an MRI in Albany last night. Then this morning he was sent to Manhattan so the Giants could give him another MRI in the hopes of getting a higher quality picture of the knee. After that MRI, Dr. Warren examined him and the Giants said “everything checked out A-OK.”

The Giants have not said when Nicks will be able to return to practice. Presumably he’s still sore and they may give him a day or two to recover. Two teammates said they saw Nicks walking around last night and he seemed fine, but the Giants are likely to be cautious this early in camp - - especially since Nicks is already limited to one practice per day as he recovers from offseason toe surgery.
