ALBANY, N.Y. -- New York Giants starting guard Rich Seubert broke a bone in his left hand, according to the team.
Seubert showed up to lunch wearing a splint on his left hand and forearm. The veteran will be examined Saturday by team physician Dr. Russell Warren, who then will have a better idea of a timetable for Seubert.
Head coach Tom Coughlin said he didn't want to speculate about Seubert's injury or offer a timetable. He also didn't sound optimistic about Seubert being able to put a cast on his broken hand and playing with the injury.
"[That's] the biggest fallacy in the world is, in this day in age," Coughlin said after practice Friday. "There was a time when I thought the same thing that you did: 'Oh yeah, broken hand, you just tape it up, put a cast on and you go play with it.' They don't do that today. If the metacarpal twists, they have to do surgery and put a pin in it and then [you could be] out for six weeks. They have to be very careful with that.
"If they go light early, if they just allow that thing to heal a little bit for a couple weeks to the point where they don't think that's the risk and they put a cast on it, then the guy can usually play. But the last few times that this has happened, in anything that I have been involved in, they have always done this: 'No, we are not going to let him go right back out.'"
Seubert, a 10-year veteran, is competing in camp to keep his starting position. The team wants to see if second-year tackle William Beatty can earn a starting spot at left tackle, which would move tackle David Diehl to Seubert's spot.
The Giants are already without starting center Shaun O'Hara, who has a chronic condition in the joint of his left ankle. The team is trying to get the swelling down, and O'Hara is expected to resume practicing Monday. Also, backup lineman Kevin Boothe is on the physically unable-to-perform list and will be out for an extended period with a pectoral injury.
The Giants have had backup Adam Koets take most of the snaps at center. Reserves Guy Whimper and rookie Mitch Petrus saw reps at guard on Friday.
Seubert was slowed by a shoulder injury all of last season and has fought through many injuries in his career.
