When Jim Harbaugh left the Stanford Cardinal to take the head coach position with the San Francisco 49ers, he brought defensive coordinator Vic Fangio with him. Fangio has 11 seasons as an NFL defensive coordinator under his belt with the Carolina Panthers, Indianapolis Colts, and Houston Texans.

His defenses changed up a lot between those jobs. His Panthers reached the NFC championship game with a zone-blitzing 3-4. For Tony Dungy's Colts, he ran a Tampa-2 scheme out of a 4-3 look. Then with Houston, he went back to a 3-4 as he helped get that franchise off the ground.

So what does he have planned for San Francisco? A little of this, a little of that. He told reporters today that "his defense will be a 3-4 in terms of personnel but he'll do some things that may appear like a 4-3." That's probably good news for Justin Smith, as it means he should get plenty of opportunity to rush the passer -- he's had at least six sacks in each of his three seasons with the 49ers, very good numbers for a 3-4 end.

Fangio also noted that he won't be on the sidelines during games. If you had "in the booth" in your office pool, you win!
