FRISCO, Texas -- It has taken longer than he wanted, but Brice Butler has finally found a role in the Dallas Cowboys' offense.

He’s their big-play threat.

Butler caught a 21-yard touchdown on the Cowboys’ first series in their 42-21 win over Detroit on Monday night. In the previous game against Tampa Bay, his 21-yard catch along the sideline in the second quarter moved the ball to the two-yard-line and set up a touchdown that gave the Cowboys a 17-10 lead.

He’s caught 15 passes -- five have gone for at least 19 yards -- for 216 yards and three touchdowns.

“Our offense is really good when we spread the ball around,” Butler said. “I’m telling you, when we give it to Zeke [Elliott] and throw it to [Jason Witten] and Dez [Bryant] and Bease [Cole Beasley] and Terrance [Williams], we’re really hard to stop on offense.”

Butler’s first touchdown against Detroit is an example of how he fits into the Cowboys’ offense.

He lined up in the slot and ran a seam route the Lions failed to cover.

“We’ve had that route a couple of times the last few weeks and we’ve missed it,” Butler said. “We talked about it during our meetings and talked about making sure if we got the right look that we took advantage of it.

“Well, we got it against the Lions and took advantage of it.”

The 26-year-old Butler is 6-foot-3, 213 pounds with good speed. He’s athletic and can make catches on contested balls. Any questions about him have always revolved around consistency.

He’s been more consistent in practice, so the Cowboys are giving him more opportunities and he's taking advantage of them.
