Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez underwent surgery on his right hip after the 2010 season, he told kids Sunday at a Connecticut-based football camp directed by his brother, the Hartford Courant reported. Hernandez was aided by crutches at the camp, according to the Courant.

Hernandez, a 2010 fourth-round draft choice, had missed the final two regular-season games with the hip injury. Appearing in the first 14 games of the season, he finished with 45 receptions for 563 yards and six touchdowns.

Hernandez returned for the team's playoff loss to the Jets after missing three weeks of practice, but was limited to one catch for four yards.

"You've always got to make changes," Hernandez told the Courant. "You can't be the same player two years in a row. You've got to be better every year, and there will be something that the coaches will tell me I need to work on, so I'll make sure to get it done."
