Despite the catastrophic oil pollution released last year in the BP oil spill, which wrecked the economy of much of the US coastal area of the Gulf of Mexico, President Obama announced in his Weekly Address today his plan to "increase responsible domestic oil production" in the Gulf and Alaska.

In a statement which made no mention of the BP disaster directly, Obama spoke of the hardships on American consumers, facing much higher gasoline prices at the pump, in some cases Obama said paying more than $60 each time they fill their tank, and paying higher prices on everything because of the increase in gas prices.

Facing increasing displeasure from American drivers as well as increasing pressure from Republicans to expand domestic drilling, President Obama repeatedly emphasized that his version of expanded drilling would be done "responsibly", with a concern to protect "sensitive" areas.

Obama also announced his support for the elimination of $4 billion in taxpayer subsidies of oil companies, which will come to a vote in Congress this week, as well as reiterating that the USA needs to invest in "clean, renewable sources of energy that are the ultimate solution to high-gas prices."

Now, Obama, announce that we can actually build some refineries and explore for oil in the states where it has BEEN CONFIRMED there is oil so we can FINALLY not be "dependent" on foreign oil.

Policy cannot change based on the changing economy and other world situations? It isn't about making up one's mind, it is about deciding what is the correct course for the given situation.

Certainly policy can change.. but if we have another disaster anything like the one before, its going to be his ass this time, not BP's.

So you are opposed to the expanded drilling or you want to be able to put Obama's head on a pike for having the unenviable task of making this decision? You cannot support more drilling while at the same time placing blame on Obama for future disasters.

I guess he won't have to make the decision.. the bill got shot down in the Senate. As did the bill to take away tax breaks for oil companies.

Friggin Congress can't get anything done right now.. meanwhile we're all still here paying f u c k ing 4 bucks a gallon for oil while they bicker amongst themselves over the best way to resolve the crisis.

I am opposed to the expanded drilling though.. at least in how it was laid out in the current bill.

I am not opposed to expanded drilling. I believe it can be done, in more shallow waters then where the govt is telling the companies they can drill. I would much rather they expand drilling on land though. The oil is there, go get it. The MME is as fault as well as BP was for that spill. They okay'd the rig. But, no, the blame is only BP's and BP's only? Bullshit. It was an accident due to incompetence on both sides.

Yeah, thanks alot "so called" govt that "wants" to "help" it's citizens. 5 bucks a ****ing gallon gas this summer. !!! Yeah!!! that means less travel, less folks working and less money being exchanged.

****ing morons.

Now we're helping our citizens by voluntarily flooding them and destroying their way of life, their homes, their families, etc..

On top of that we're going to be giving billions of dollars of aid to Arab nations now.. people who hate our guts and want nothing to do with Obama. Awesome strategy you f u c k ing piece of shit. F u c k Obama and f u c k anyone who thinks he's doing a good job. We're drowning here in our own society and instead of fixing us at home we continue to try and push our freedom for the world BS and aid countries who hate us. Is Obama the POTUS or President of the Muslim Brotherhood? Christ help us.
