Brandon Meriweather accused of shooting two people

Posted by Mike Florio on March 10, 2011, 5:26 AM EST

The rumors first surfaced Wednesday on the Twitter page of Florida radio personality Dan Sileo. Next, we received text messages regarding the scuttlebutt from Jorge Sedano of 790 the Ticket in Miami. We fired off an e-mail to Patriots spokesman Stacey James, who had not yet heard anything about it.

Early this morning, Deadspin reported based on a conversation with the alleged victims’ lawyer that Patriots safety Brandon Meriweather is accused of shooting two people during a fight that broke out at a house party in Apopka, Florida on February 27.

John Morgan claims that Meriweather fired at his clients, with the bullet grazing one of them and hitting the other in the head.

“He’s extremely lucky to be alive,” Morgan said.

As Deadspin points out, these are only allegations at this point.

Stay tuned.

Wasn't there gun issues surrounding Merriweather prior to the draft, or am I confused.

A very good player, but if these recent off the field allegations are true it will ruin him.

For example: Plaxico Burress.

Police confirm Meriweather was at shooting; relative says he broke up fight

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on March 10, 2011

Details continue to slowly come out regarding Brandon Meriweather’s involvement in a shooting that occurred in Orlando nearly two weeks ago, leaving two men injured.

The Orange County Sheriff’s office confirmed to the Boston Herald that Meriweather was indeed present at the time of the shooting.

“We will continue to provide information that is available for release when proper to do so, and in a timely manner,” the office said in a statement released Thursday afternoon, noting the investigation was open.

One of Meriweather’s relatives, who stayed anonymous for fear of retribution, told Bob Hohler of the Boston Globe that Meriweather was trying to break up a fight when the shots were fired.

The story painted by Hohler is one of multiple fights throughout a night of partying, culminating in a gunfight and accidental shooting. Meriweather’s cousins were involved and the anonymous witness even named who he believes was the gunman — Anton Massey.

The entire account is worth checking out, although it’s worth noting that Meriweather’s relative has a potential bias when trying to clear his family member’s name.
