After a quiet first 24 hours in free agency, the Dallas Cowboys got busy Friday afternoon. They re-signed one of their own free agents and added three from other teams.
Receiver Terrance Williams, a third-round pick of the Cowboys in 2013, agreed to a four-year, $17 million deal – worth up to $5 million more in incentives – with $9.5 million guaranteed, according to sources.
The Cowboys also came to terms with defensive tackle Stephen Paea on a one-year, $2 million deal and with cornerback Nolan Carroll on a three-year, $10 million deal, according to sources. They also took a flier on a former Texas A&M standout, agreeing with defensive end Damontre Moore.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said last week his priorities in free agency were a “war daddy” pass rusher and Williams.
Receivers coach Derek Dooley had pushed for the re-signing of Williams, and with fourth receiver Brice Butler re-signing earlier this week, it assures Dak Prescott of having his receiving corps back intact.
Williams has never missed a game in his four seasons since the Cowboys made him a third-round pick, making 177 catches for 2,791 yards and 20 touchdowns.
The Cowboys celebrated a victory after several losses Thursday.
They stood pat on the first day of free agency, watching four of their 18 free agents walk out the door. Defensive tackle Terrell McClain, safety Barry Church, defensive lineman Jack Crawford and guard Ron Leary all left for more money.
The Cowboys began filling those vacancies Friday.
Paea, who joins his fourth team in four years, replaces McClain. He was in Chicago four years, spending his first two seasons with Cowboys defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli.
Paea, 28, played in 13 games with one start last season in Cleveland, making a half sack and six tackles. In his six-year career, he has 42 starts, 73 tackles and 14 sacks.
Moore, 24, a third-round pick of the Giants in 2013, played with three teams the past two seasons. He signed with the Seahawks late last season and made half a sack. He has played 49 career games with no starts, making 10 sacks, 52 tackles and forcing two fumbles.
Neither of the team’s free agent cornerbacks has left yet, but the Cowboys anticipate the departures of Morris Claiborne and Brandon Carr after seeing their free agent market. So the Cowboys moved on to Carroll.
Carroll, 30, has played seven NFL seasons – four with the Dolphins and the past three with the Eagles. He has 54 starts, including all 16 last season.
Carroll has made eight interceptions, 221 tackles and 47 pass breakups in his career, including one interception, 10 pass breakups and 41 tackles last season.
The Cowboys wanted either Carr or Claiborne back, even though Carr never lived up to the five-year, $50.1 million deal he signed in 2012 and Claiborne couldn’t stay on the field after the Cowboys made him the sixth overall pick in 2012.
