Why does Cowboys owner Jerry Jones give so many second chances?
By Jon Machota

Jerry Jones has a reputation of giving more second chances than any other NFL owner.

This has again become a topic of discussion in Dallas with Rolando McClain remaining on the Cowboys roster despite receiving a 10-game suspension for violating the league's substance-abuse policy.

So why does the Cowboys owner and general manager continue giving out additional opportunities to players most teams would not?

"I've had nine lives in my life," Jones recently said on Colin Cowherd's show The Herd. "And I had it principally with my father. When I walked out the door, my father would give me the riot act. He would be so tough on me.

"He would be so restrictive in his conversation with me that I would say, 'You know, Daddy, let's just watch television and have a beer here. It's not worth it for me to go out.' He would say, 'Oh Jerry, I want you to be what you can be and live. I just want you to be careful and not kill your friends or your other friends driving too fast, drinking and driving.'

"The guy, though, when I did get it in the ditch -- and I got it into the ditch -- my first man there to help me work through the problem was him. Now, he kicked my ass. But other than that, it was good love. I had it that way and I feel that way about our players."

because he is so woefully inferior to his peers with whom he has to compete against, he must take as many long shot risks available in an attempt to overcome his deficiency as a football GM. We just need a couple hundred more years with him behind the wheel for one of these long shots to finally pay off

Patience Cowboy fans, patience

I think it has little to do with football. For some reason, it makes him feel good. Maybe it reminds him of his dad. Maybe he likes having players beholden to him for life. Maybe he wants the post-football praise from people like Deion and Michael. Whatever it is, it's ridiculous.

But you do know he's a mere figurehead, right? Doesn't run the football side any more than 31 other owners.
