Last week, NFL.com anointed Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo as the most impactful player returning from injury.

This week, Pro Football Focus, has Romo near the top of another list. This one’s not so complimentary, however. He comes at No. 3 on its list of top five worst NFL quarterback contracts.

Part of it is Romo’s age, at 36, he’s becoming a greybeard of the position. Part of it is his injury history; Romo missed 12 games last season. Here’s PFF’s reasoning for the No. 3 ranking:

“This is another case of a good-but-not-elite quarterback getting paid like an elite signal-caller. The situation is worse now that Romo is 36, coming off a season full of injury and bad play, and is under contract for another four years.

In six of the last seven games Romo has played in, he’s graded very close to average, and in his most recent game against the Panthers, he was on pace for one of the worst games in the PFF era in just 22 dropbacks. In 2015, even when Romo wasn’t under pressure, he only recorded an NFL QB rating of 93.2, his lowest in the PFF era (since 2007). Romo is one of eight quarterbacks who has a cap hit above $20 million in 2016; in order for him to live up to his contract this next season, he would need to be just as good, if not better, than he’s been in recent years. It’s unlikely that a quarterback coming off an injury-filled season at his age will produce the best season of his career. Realistically, Romo will be overpaid for the next two years, and then the Cowboys could let him go in 2018 or 2019 if his performance declines.”

Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones has said he believes Romo has five good years left. That is obviously debatable.

The two quarterbacks ahead of Romo on the list are Eli Manning of the New York Giants, and Joe Flacco of the Baltimore Ravens. Sure, both got paid like elite NFL quarterbacks, as did Romo.

The big difference is those two guys have three Super Bowl rings between them.

I have always considered PFF garbage and this is another. Only Romo haters do not acknowledge he is an elite QB. And how quickly PFF seems to have forgotten his 2014 season when he SHOULD have been NFL MVP.

"It’s unlikely that a quarterback coming off an injury-filled season at his age will produce the best season of his career."

Once again PFF has a convenient memory- Peyton Manning a couple of years ago coming off of injuries had the best year of his career- and he was OLDER than Romo. Brett Favre had one of his absolute best years older than Romo. Tom Brady seems to be doing pretty good older than Romo. Romo's injury was not to his passing arm; it was a broken clavicle and can PFF show any QB that that really affected- EVER?

The problem with PFF is they don't factor in intangibles into their complicated little algorithm. And, that is what makes Tony special.

Ridiculous. He's still one of the better Qbs in the league, which is all that matters, and he got a market-value contract a few years ago.

And I thought PFF was supposed to be too sophisticated to use the lame "rings" argument.

Romo may be old and he may be fragile, but he's the only chance this franchise has for the next couple of years. Pay the man.

Exactly. There would have certain GMs and/or teams that would have brought all the dough for Romo had he hit the open market.
And probably still would.

Romo is exactly what Parcells says he is.

Parcells gave Romo that list of things having to do with self-discipline and playing/preparing carefully so his gunslinging doesn't become a detriment.

But if you watched that first game last year against the Giants and saw Romo calling out exactly what the Giants were going to do on defense like he had been in their huddle, you see an elite player. But in the same game you see a player who still needs coaching and a field strategist and discipline, which is what Parcells was saying. Romo threw 2 interceptions and fumbled a snap. His players not really being open is more of the scheme issue, but Romo controls Linehans opinions more than Linehan opinions control Romo.

Brilliantly reckless and recklessly brilliant.

Last year proved that Romo is E A S I L Y the most valuable player for probably any franchise.

He carries this team. Always has. We go as he goes.

Defense is mediocre at best and can't get a critical stop when needed.

Head coach is a in over his head, never has creative game plans, lacks situational awareness, and has no feel for the game or an understanding of when to make mid game adjustments.

Owner is a glory hog who cares more about making headlines, money, and being liked/respected than he does football.

We've got dark days ahead when Romo retires.

And this is coming from a guy who dislikes Romo anymore.

In that list I can look at the top 15 salaries for QB's and come up with 5-10 that are worse than Romo.

How is Jay Cutler not in the top 3?

Ryan Tannehill isnt worse than Romo?

Kapernick?

Kirk Cousins?

Romo is a bargain at his salary.

It's bad but only because the Jones' have fucked it into being bad with restructuring.

Think of a Fleshlight that's been passed around a maximum security prison for a few months. Wasn't bad when it started, but now it's a fucking mess.

Whatever is being paid to Garrett and Wilson should be given to Romo on top of his contract. They both only draw a paycheck because Jerry uses Romo to lie to himself about what Garrett and Wilson truly are.
