Dallas Cowboys: Why defense doesn't win championships

15z135.jpg

Ok then. The Cowboys are excused from needing to build a good defense. Never mind that rich history of top 12 defenses throughout the Super Bowl era. But hey! Maybe they can spot a unicorn or force a leprechaun to cough up his pot of gold!

Silly me. I thought you strive to build a good defense as a standard operating procedure. I know I am just an armchair GM and all, but I would approach any team building with a goal of a good defense, and a good offense and special teams as well. I would rather feel confident that I have a good team all around than try and gimmick my way to a title with a sub par defense. Actually my ass should get fired if I field a lousy defense in any other year than the first year of a total rebuild. By year two the defense should be good or I should hit the door.

"thelandryhat" needs to get a new name because Tom Landry would not agree with their notions about defense and winning titles. Of that I am certain.

I avoid that site like the plague. It makes the people at Blogging The Boys look like a bunch of raging pessimists.

Isn't there some stat like when the #1 offense plays the #1 defense in Championship games, that the defense is undefeated?

Not sure but would interested in seeing how many times that's actually happened.

From Super Bowls only.89 49ers beat the defense, only time the offense won.

Only two teams with a lesser record on that list won the title. KC and Denver last yr.

Also, a number of those teams are among the best of all time. Green Bay, Pittsburgh (even though I think they got some help in that XIII) game and both SF teams are all considered among the best ever. Even the Dallas team that lost to Pitt in 78 is considered one of the better teams of the Super Bowl era. Some of these teams not only had great defenses, but they also had outstanding offensive teams.

GB finished 4th in scoring and 8th in total offense.

KC finished 2nd in scoring and 3rd in total offense.

Pittsburgh in 78 finished 5th in scoring and 8th overall in total offense

SF in 84 and 89 went a combined 29-3 during the regular season. History considers those offenses among the best ever. in 84 SF finished 2nd in scoring and total offense. The 89 team finished 1st in scoring offense and total offense.

Of the teams you listed, only the Giants and Broncos (last yr) were teams that I'd say won the super bowl mainly because of their defense. Both those teams had middling offenses and the Giants were actually playing a backup QB at the end of the yr and the postseason. The remainder were all very well balanced teams that were great in a number of areas.

First of all not my list.No. 1 Offense Vs. No. 1 Defense: The Winner Is . . . | Sportspress Northwest
Secondly,It's strictly no 1 ranked defense vs no 1 ranked offense.Again, not my list.
We all know, like the Cowboys in 2014,the offense keeping the ball longer can make a mediocre or even shitty defense look statistically better.
Thirdly,not my list.
Not sure but would interested in seeing how many times that's actually happened.

And fourth, just trying to save you the trouble of opening another tab brother always looking out for you.

Good defense doesn't sell tickets guys. Younger fans with limited ability to sit still want every game to be 54-51 with high powered passing offenses. Jerry wants to sell tickets to pay for his no home field advantage what-so-ever stadium. So all the sunshine pumpers want high powered offense because that what Jerry wants

Last ten super bowl winners, 4 of them ranked in top-5 of points allowed defensively

It's a cherry picked stat that means nothing. 4 out of last 10? Why did you stop at 10? What's the relevance there? Why did you use scoring defense as the metric? What point were you trying to make? Are you of the belief that defense doesn't matter?

Help me understand your point instead of just dropping a random and useless stat.
