Report: DeMarcus Ware may not be back with Broncos

Ware may not be back with Broncos

Coming off a two-sack performance against the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50, Denver Broncos pass rusher DeMarcus Ware is currently living the dream. After 11 years of Hall of Fame-caliber play in the NFL, he’s finally at the pinnacle of his profession.

None of this matters a whole heck of a lot when it comes to the economics of the NFL. At 33 years old and after missing five games due to injury this past season, Ware isn’t anywhere near as valuable to his team as some might think.

This is only magnified by the fact that he’s set to count $11.7 million against the cap in 2016.

With the Broncos finding themselves in the unenviable position of having to re-sign multiple starters on both sides of the ball, Ware’s contract could be up for discussion in the coming weeks. After all, Denver can save $10 million by releasing the nine-time Pro Bowler.

ESPN’s Jeff Legwold broke down Denver’s offseason priorities in an article recently, providing this useful piece of information in the process:

“Ware did miss five games with a back injury this past season with plenty of back/neck troubles previously in his career. His $11.67 million cap figure will likely be looked to for some adjustment. So, if he chooses to retire or does not want to re-work the deal at least somewhat, there is a chance he would not remain.”

Retirement is an obvious option for a player who has seen his fair share of nicks and bruises throughout a lengthy NFL career.

And if Ware were to decide that taking a pay cut isn’t in his best interest, it’s more than likely he could be calling a new city home in 2016.

With Brock Osweiler, Von Miller, Brandon Marshall, Danny Trevathan and Malik Jackson all slated to become free agents next month, the defending champions have some rather interesting decisions to make.

It’s also important to note that Denver finds itself just $11 million under the cap — a number that would be more than used up if it decides to franchise Miller.

With two young pass rushers in the form of Shaquil Barrett and Shane Ray behind him on the depth chart, there’s very little reason to believe the Broncos would retain Ware at his current cap figure.

Then again, the veteran could decide to take a pay cut in order to remain with the defending champs. That could be the more plausible scenario at this point.

Bring him back.

Add more defensive talent in free agency.

Add more defensive talent in the draft.

At his age, how long can he be productive especially in a 4-3?

A 3-4 ROLB and a 4-3 RDE are basically the same player. Ware has gone back-and-forth over the years, it wouldn't really impact him.

I'd say he signs a 3-year deal (to get a higher signing bonus) where he never sees the 3rd year.

Except he really didn't do jack once we went to the 4-3. HowEVER:

I wouldn't complain if that happened.

Ware missed 5 games due to injury this past year alone.

If Ware were open to signing an incentive laden, performance based contract, I guess I could see signing him. At this stage, though, it isn't smart to count on Ware being physically able to contribute consistently. The Cowboys need younger, more reliable answers at DE.

If you want to sign Ware for limited snaps and to assist the younger DE's, that could work. It all comes down to what he'd cost.
