Cowboys could net serious compensatory picks in 2016

IRVING, Texas -- The second full day of free agency starts today. Maybe today is the day the Dallas Cowboys make a deal in free agency, and we’re not talking about DeMarco Murray.
But if there is an upside to what has happened to the Cowboys so far in free agency, it is what could happen in 2016. By losing Justin Durant, Jermey Parnell, Dwayne Harris and Bruce Carter in free agency, the Cowboys stand to earn the maximum four compensatory picks next year and not late-round selections either.
It will be contingent on how many free agents they sign and for how much money, but there isn’t a sign that the team that will be doing a big-money deal for a player on the open market.
By now everybody should realize the Cowboys are following their stated plan before free agency. They are sitting back and letting the market come to them. They liked defensive tackle Stephen Paea but not at the $5 million a year he got from the Washington Redskins. They liked Davon House, but not at the $6 million a year price tag the Jacksonville Jaguars signed him.
By the end of the week, the prices start to fall if they are not starting to fall already.
But with Durant getting three years and $10.8 million from the Atlanta Falcons, Parnell getting five years and $32.4 million from the Jaguars, Carter getting five years and $20.5 million from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Harris getting $17.5 million from the New York Giants, the Cowboys stand to do much better in the compensatory market in 2016 than they did in 2014.
The Cowboys should not get any compensatory picks this year with Jason Hatcher’s departure negated by the signings of Henry Melton and Jeremy Mincey.
The Cowboys had three compensatory picks last year but they were all in the seventh round. The Cowboys drafted Ahmad Dixon, Ken Bishop and Terrance Mitchell with their compensatory picks. Only Bishop remains.
The Cowboys have had 32 compensatory picks over the years. Larry Allen was the best, coming in the second round of the 1992 draft. Twenty of those picks came after the fourth round. The Parnell deal could net them a fourth-rounder in 2016. Carter could get them a fifth.
One thing is for certain, there is no such thing as having too many picks.
