The Dallas Cowboys will devote Saturday's camp-opening practice to determining each player's condition. Rookies continued team-run strength-and-conditioning sessions after the end of mini-camps, but veterans have been on their own for about six weeks.

"I expect them to come in in good shape," Phillips said. "When they left the off-season program, they were all at least pointing toward coming in at a good weight. We want them to be in good physical condition, so we'll find that out as far as the practice is concerned."

At least one player had no difficulty meeting his assigned weight. According to Phillips, quarterback Tony Romo checked in five pounds below his weight. The Cowboys list Romo at 226 pounds.

Linebacker Brandon Williams will be limited to one practice per day on the Alamodome's artificial turf. Williams underwent surgeyr last year to repair a torn ligament in the left knee. Phillips said inside linebacker Keith Brooking, who had off-season knee surgery, is capable of handling both sessions when the Cowboys practice twice a day but probably will be held out of some work. Punter Mat McBriar, who also had off-season knee surgery, has been cleared for full work on turf.
