Super Bowl XLV not the Cowboys' focus

Jerry Jones, Stephen Jones and Wade Phillips spoke for a little more than hour at the opening press conference of training camp Friday and not surprisingly a lot of the talk centered around Super Bowl XLV, which will be played at Cowboys Stadium.

You could see Jerry Jones ride the emotions of what it would mean to be the first team to play in a Super Bowl in its own stadium, while also trying to shoot down his own excitement.

With the team celebrating its 50th anniversary, Emmitt Smith earning induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the Super Bowl coming to Arlington, the Cowboys have been viewed as a preseason favorite in the NFC. They return 20 of 22 starters from a team that won the NFC East and a playoff game.

"There's not a lot of things not to like about the upcoming season," Jones said, "but we all know the game and the journey that's ahead of us and that's important."

Phillips preached more of a one-day-at-a-time theory.

"We're pointing in the right direction, but there are no guarantees," the coach said.

Phillips' message to the team will be more about the first practice than what could happen in February. He made a similar point to the 2008 team in front of the Hard Knocks' cameras but it didn't sink in well enough. Add that to injuries at key spots, like losing Tony Romo for three games, and the Cowboys missed the playoffs after finishing 13-3 in 2007.

"We're going to take a 'right now' approach," Phillips said, adding, "We don't have a football team yet. We have 80 guys ... They have to prove it again."
