IRVING, Texas – This weekend’s rookie minicamp provided a first look on the field at all the new draftees, undrafted rookies and workout players hoping to get noticed, as well as some select first-year pros.

Two weeks after hearing their names called in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Cowboys’ selections appeared together on the field with Cowboys jerseys and shorts to give their first impressions as a group.

Some of those draftees stood out more than others, as was the case for the other 40 players on the field, comprised of undrafted rookies and select veterans.

Thursday’s rainy weather held off for the rookie minicamp to commence as planned on Friday without field conditions playing a part in inhibiting performances. The DallasCowboys.com staff took a look at which new players stood out the most during the two days and four practices.

Most Noticeable Draft Pick:

Nick – The first guy that stood out to me this weekend was B.W. Webb. The fourth-round pick looks smooth in his backpedal and just looks like he’s NFL-ready. That’s not something you’d always expect from a small-school player. But he competes well in pass coverage. He could be battling for playing time right away.

Bryan – The one player that stood out for me this weekend was cornerback B.W. Webb. The movement skills he showed on film along with his quickness showed up in this camp. I will be very interested to see how he responds when this squad gets completely together and how he does covering guys like Bryant and Austin that are going to make covering that much difficult than the receivers that he is facing now. There is no doubt of his talent.

Rowan – If for nothing else than the fact that he towers over most other players at his position or on the outside, the most noticeable was Gavin Escobar. These rookie minicamps are perfectly suited for his talents. His best attribute is his pass-catch ability, and he demonstrated that while running routes.

David – The guy I had my eyes on the most was J.J. Wilcox. I wanted to see how he handed a professional minicamp with just one year of safety under his belt, and he didn’t disappoint. Wilcox seemed to show good instincts. He also got in on the biggest hit of the weekend when he and running back Kendial Lawrence collided during a scrimmage.

Most Noticeable Rookie Free Agent:

Nick – The guy I noticed was Jakar Hamilton, but not for a great reason. He was throwing up on the side field right off the bat. But he’s looked pretty good in his coverage skills. He has a fluid motion to him. Looks like a guy who started his career at Georgia, more than someone who went to South Carolina State. Which of course, he did both.

Bryan – I really like what I have seen overall all of safety Jakar Hamilton. Things didn’t start out well for Hamilton on Friday morning but he fought through the practice and bounced back nicely in the afternoon. With the two practices on Saturday he was once again around the ball and not only showed some range in the team periods coverage wise but when he had to go one-on-one with Gavin Escobar he was able to get the job done position wise.

Rowan – Kendial Lawrence looked shifty, demonstrated an ability to catch the ball and caught my eye out of the backfield. Granted, he’s not getting tackled. But the running back from Missouri looks like a player that should be able to compete for a role on the team after a solid final year in college.

David – I kept having to look at my roster to figure out who No. 14 was. But Eric Rogers looked solid in the wide receiver spot. Behind Terrance Williams and Jared Green, who were expected to stand out, I thought Rogers had a strong weekend among the receivers.

Most Noticeable Workout Player:

Nick – Hard to say you notice these guys. But Adrien Spencer will be my pick because when I first noticed him, I thought he was a little Anthony Spencer, only to find out they are really brothers. But I watched him practice and he’s got some skill. He’s also coming off an Achilles injury, but looked pretty smooth.

Bryan – Jason Garrett spoke about guard D.J. Hall, but defensive tackle Nick Johnson deserves some consideration to being added to this roster for training camp this summer. He has been able to make plays against Frederick and Leary when he has faced those matchups. With Brian Price now on injured reserve they are going to need to add some help inside so he might be a good fit.

Rowan – Most of the attention naturally goes toward the seven draftees. But occasionally, a player will come down with a pass or bat a ball and garner some looks. Wide receiver Antoine Hicks joined the rookie minicamp after most of the workout players, but in one day at camp he made an impression by getting separation and fighting for the ball.

David – Dominique Whaley was only at minicamp for a day, but he showed up looking the part of an NFL running back. He looked good in no-contact drills, and he showed some sharp hands.

Also... I have more faith in Jakar Hamilton than I do JJ Wilbust.

My "source" told me his team had similar (7th round) grades on both players and actually liked Hamilton more. I really like Wilcox but that scared me. His team has been pretty dead on lately.

I never seen anyone mock Wilbust higher than the 5th round. He was always considered a late round prospect. So hearing teams had him as a 7th is not suprising at all.

What about his coverage skills?

I applaud this team in being preemptive with Scandrick's replacement, but why not as well with the DL?

Most of our draft was cap related. We mucked our cap up so much, that we drafted players to release expensive veterans instead of addressing actual needs.

We had no expensive defensive lineman, so we didn't draft any defensive lineman.

You apprently didnt read much on the draft then. He was in alot of top-100's and rated as a mid round prospect by just about all that I found.

His stock really rose after the Senior Bowl week and game. he really had a great week there.

I just looked at two threads in our draft area. Wilcox was 68 I think in Mayock's last top-100. Lande had Wilcox in his top-120 from his list released back in Feb

I'm sure I can find other examples

Of course I didn't. :jerkoff

He was in alot of top-100's

By a lot of top 100's, you mean 1 right?

Because he's 68th in Mayocks, but doesn't rank in the top 100 of Russ Lande, Dane Brugler, Gil Brandy, Rob Rang, or Scouts Inc top 100.

and rated as a mid round prospect by just about all that I found.

Mid to late round prospect. Not a third rounder.

3(80) J.J. Wilcox S Georgia Southern

Mel Kiper Jr., ESPN: 5th rated S, 51st player overall, designated top sleeper and made underrated list, 2nd round projection.

Despite playing just one year at S, Wilcox showed big time results in 2012. I love his speed to the ball, that he hits with purpose and that he's a good overall tackler. He's going to keep getting better in coverage and, with more coaching and experience, he could evolve into a pro bowl caliber performer. Wilcox has tremendous long range potential and hinted that he could be special in a year or two by being one of the stickout performers in Mobile at the Senior Bowl practices. With his talent and upside potential, I can't see an exciting prospect like Wilcox getting out of the second round.

-

Nolan Nawrocki, Pro Football Weekly: 5th rated FS, Not included in top 150 overall, 4th-5th round projection.

Inexperienced, inconsistent defender who bounced from WR to RB to S and it shows in his uneven play. Flashes enough athletic talent to warrant consideration as a developmental project, but requires patience and might never get it. Still very much a developmental prospect.

-

Frank Coyle, Draft Insiders Digest: 11th rated S, 149th player overall, 5th round projection.

Athletic hard-hitting senior safety has risen up the charts quickly after converting to defense for his final season. J.J. had an impressive performance at S in 2012 that culminated with Senior Bowl and Combine invitations. He played RB and WR his first three season but was a natural once he moved to S where his physical skill set and temperament were a good match. He has good speed and range to play the position. He shows a nose for the ball with quick read and react skills. At times he looked for the big hit which caused him to miss tackles. He is the type with the mental and physical toughness to be an early special teams demon. He is capable of surprising in package defenses if he settles in a position in the dime set where he can shadow the QB or play the back quarter. He is not ready to match up with fast receivers initially in coverage. Marginal top 125 prospect. Eventual starting S with well rounded skills.

-

Scouts Inc.: 8th rated S, 103rd overall player, 4th round projection.

Still picking up the nuances of the position. It's somewhat surprising that he doesn't pick up the ball better considering his experience on offense, though that could improve as he gets better at reading QBs and WRs. However, he has the blend of size, speed and fluidity to play S at the NFL level is he continues to improve. Even though he isn't a fundamentally sound tackler, he's not afraid to step up and he flashes some pop.

-

Rob Rang, NFL Draft Scout: 5th rated SS, 120th player overall, 3rd-4th round projection.

Wilcox ranks as one of the more intriguing projections of the 2013 draft for scouts. His size, athleticism and versatility caught the attention of talent evaluators, including Phil Savage and the Senior Bowl, who brought him in to compete against the nation's elite prospects. Athletic frame with thick lower half. Good lateral agility. Surprisingly adept as an open-field tackler. Attacks the line of scrimmage when he reads run. Showed some instincts and range operating as a single-high S in Mobile. Questionable straight-line speed. A work in progress regarding his technique, though in fairness, this is to be expected.

Chiefs should take Manti Te'o first overall. - Mel Kiper

When arguing with fools, don't answer their foolish arguments, or you will become as foolish as they are

I didnt post it to support one argument or another, I posted it for information purposes.

It certainly doesnt support the assinine idea that Wilcox was a 7th rd/UDFA prospect though does it?

And what do "middle round" mean?
