I love it when rivals get injured.

Just the way I was raised.

Not a rival, but an injury to a first rounder:

Report: Bengals CB Dre Kirkpatrick suffers pre-camp knee injury

7/25/2012

Bengals rookie cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick is telling associates that he suffered a leg injury while gearing up for camp, Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com reports. According to one league source, there could be an issue with a small broken bone in that area, and could cause the rookie to miss most or all of camp.

The Bengals declined comment, and cited coach Marvin Lewis' policy of not addressing anything potentially injury-related this time of year until after the team has gathered for camp and players have taken their physicals.

Lofa Tatupu out for the season

7/24/2012

Falcons linebacker Lofa Tatupu, who’s trying to make a comeback after sitting out last season, suffered a serious pectoral injury that required surgery and will be out for the season, head coach Mike Smith said on Tuesday according to D. Orlando Ledbetter of Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Tatupu, who was signed to a two-year, $3.6 million contract in March, was slated to compete with second-year linebacker Akeem Dent, of Douglass High and the University of Georgia, for the vacated starting middle linebacker spot. Tatupu received a guranteed $600,000 signing bonus and has a $1.25 million playing time escalator clause in his contract.

Reports out of Eagles camp: WR Riley Cooper, broken collarbone. Ouch.

The Philadelphia Eagles’ receiving corps has been dealt a blow early in training camp.

Riley Cooper, the Eagles’ No. 4 receiver, suffered a broken collarbone when he went down hard in practice today. Cooper is currently at a nearby hospital being X-rayed. Collarbone injuries typically sideline players for several weeks at least.

According to Tim McManus of Birds 24/7, Cooper and cornerback Curtis Marsh both went up for a pass, and Cooper fell to the ground and immediately started pounding the grass in pain.

Last year Cooper caught 16 passes for 315 yards. This year he’s behind DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin and Jason Avant on the depth chart.

The Eagles also saw defensive end Jason Babin leave practice with a right calf strain. He will have an MRI, but the Eagles said it is definitely not an Achilles injury, and the early indications are that it’s not serious.

Michael Crabtree, injured again
Posted by Mike Florio on July 28, 2012, 11:41 PM EDT

APThe 49ers could be down to four No. 1 receivers.

Michael Crabtree, a first-round pick in 2009 who has yet to fulfill his potential, potentially could be out for a while with an ankle injury.

Cam Inman of BayAreaNewsGroup.com reports that Crabtree missed Saturday’s practice after injuring the ankle late in Friday’s practice.

Coach Jim Harbaugh would say only that Crabtree is “working through something.” (Maybe he swallowed a Lego.)

“He’ll be all right. He’s good,” 49ers running back Frank Gore said of Crabtree. “He’s going to be ready.”

Crabtree has yet to participate in a full training camp. He held out into the regular season as a rookie, and he has had neck and foot injuries in his other two Augusts.

@NYPost_Schwartz: Coughlin said Terrell Thomas' knee is swollen and he's at Hospital for Special Surgery getting tests

Giants CB Terrell Thomas re-injures knee, doesn’t sound good
Posted by Darin Gantt on July 30, 2012, 4:26 PM EDT

APThe Giants don’t sound particularly optimistic, after cornerback Terrell Thomas re-injured his right knee and was sent off for tests this morning.

Thomas missed last year with a torn ACL, and after getting tangled up with wide receiver Dominik Hixon Sunday, Thomas came in today with swelling and was sent to the Hospital for Special Surgery (which is a really ominous-sounding name for a hospital, by the way).

When coach Tom Coughlin was asked if there was any news on Thomas, he replied, “Unfortunately, there is, . . .,” according to Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News.

The Giants are expected to announce more this afternoon, but it doesn’t take much reading between the lines to anticipate it’s not good.

Last year’s ACL tear was his second, with the first in his college days at Southern Cal. Despite that history, the Giants signed him to a four-year, $28 million deal in March, though the likelihood of him seeing that amount is slim.

It included a $1 million signing bonus and $1 million in base salary, and that might be all he sees. There’s a $6 million option bonus next March, but unless the news is unexpectedly good, that doesn’t seem like anything he’ll ever earn.

For the Giants, that puts more pressure on former first-rounder Prince Amukamara. Since Aaron Ross left for Jacksonville in free agency, the Giants are extremely thin there.

They were/are really high on Cooper. Interesting thing about Cooper is that he was the only WR of the Eagles that had a good rapport/chemistry with Vince Young.

Mike McCarthy shocked by number of Packers injuries

By Gregg Rosenthal
Around The League editor
Published: Aug. 13, 2012 at 10:26 a.m. Updated: Aug. 13, 2012 at 10:52 a.m.

The Green Bay Packers could be without linebacker Desmond Bishop, one of their best defensive players, for the rest of the season. Their starting left tackle (Marshall Newhouse) and best receiver (Greg Jennings) are recovering from concussions. The team barely has any running backs.

"I don't know what's going on, I've never seen anything like it," McCarthy said Sunday via the Green Bay Press-Gazette. "I've never dealt with numbers like this before, just the number of players missing practice."

The Packers shortened practice to help cope with all the injuries. 19 players missed Sunday's practice, after 21 missed it the day before. Running back James Starks' injury may be the most worrisome other than losing Bishop.

This was supposed to be the year Starks stepped up. But he suffered a turf toe injury and is now "week to week" which usually means at least a few weeks. Turf toe is a famously slow injury to heal. Third-stringer Brandon Saine is also hurt. Second-year pro Alex Green is the projected starter at the moment; he's coming off major reconstructive knee surgery. Now you get an idea why the Packers signed Cedric Benson.

If nothing else, McCarthy could take solace that all of these injuries are happening so early. The most injury-plagued team last August was the New York Giants.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Nnamdi Asomugha was knocked out after he collided with Nate Allen in the most violent hit of Eagles training camp.

Asomugha laid face down on the ground with little to no movement for close to five minutes before he finally rose to one knee. The cornerback then slowly stood, was helped to a cart and driven inside.

Allen was down for a brief period, but he got up much quicker than Asomugha.

The Eagles will have an injury update after practice.

Giants suddenly thin on defensive line after a rash of injuries

Posted by Darin Gantt on August 14, 2012, 10:55 AM EDT

One of the foundations of the Giants success in recent years has been the depth of their defensive line.

That depth took a serious hit Tuesday morning, as they four of their defensive linemen are dealing with a variety of health issues, per Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger.

Veteran defensive tackle Shaun Rogers is being treated for a blood clot in his leg, and second-year man Marvin Austin has been sent to the Hospital for Special Surgery for an unspecified back issue.

Austin missed his entire rookie season with a torn pectoral muscle, and after being suspended his final year at North Carolina, he’s been off the field for nearly three years.

Also, backup defensive tackle Martin Parker has a herniated disc that will require surgery, and backup defensive end Justin Trattou has a heel problem that will keep him out a few more weeks.

With defensive end Chris Canty still on the PUP list, and tackle Rocky Bernard just back after missing the preseason opener with a knee issue, the Giants are suddenly thin, and relying on a bunch of unknowns.

when we play them they will just line up tuck, osi and jpp all over the place and we will probably never take advantage of whatever shortcomings they have that night.

unless we can pound the ball, which I am not sold we can do.

Redskins lose nose tackle Chris Neild for the season to torn ACL
By Washington Post Sports
Backup nose tackle Chris Neild +is out for the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, coach Mike Shanahan said Tuesday afternoon.

Neild injured his knee Monday and underwent an MRI exam.

The second-year man from West Virginia was battling for a roster spot with Chris Baker, who spent all but a few hours of last season on the practice squad.

After recording two sacks and a forced fumble in the opening game last season, Neild had no sacks the rest of the way. He appeared in all 16 games and had 10 tackles.

@NYPost_Schwartz: Not good news for Will Beatty who Coughlin said has been "shut down" again because of back issue. #NYG

Will Beatty has been and continues to be the biggest question mark the Giants have going into this season.
