JON MACHOTA The Dallas Morning News

Growing up in Flint, Michigan, Brandon Carr had a goal that was bigger than reaching the NFL. The 6-0, 207-pound cornerback, who signed a five-year contract with the Cowboys in March, always wanted to be a role model for younger athletes.

Fast-forward about 10 years and Carr has remained true to his original plan.

Although he’s been in Dallas for less than two months, Carr has already become involved in the community. Volunteering his time through the NFL’s Play 60 program and participating in several charity basketball games.

“I’m all about giving back,” Carr said Sunday after completing an NFL Play 60 fitness workout in North Dallas. “I feel like the community I play for, they support me every Sunday. I’m just all about giving back and showing the community that I appreciate everything they do for us.”

He added: “I’m all about setting a good example and going out there and just being with new people. I’m new to Texas. I’m all about going wherever I need to go to meet new fans and go to new areas and meet people of different ethnicities.”

NFL PLAY 60 is a campaign that raises awareness for childhood obesity by encouraging kids to be active for 60 minutes per day.

While spending his first four NFL seasons in Kansas City, Carr was involved in several community events, something he says was encouraged by the Hunt family, who has owned the franchise since it was founded in 1959.

Carr revealed Sunday that his transition from Kansas City to Dallas is complete. His goal was to get the moving process out of the way as soon as possible so he could begin working out with his new teammates and become acclimated to a different climate.

He also mentioned that the local cuisine is something that has immediately become one of his favorite aspects of Dallas.

Anything else stand out about his new home?

“Just the city, there’s a lot of stuff going on,” Carr said. “A lot of opportunities and possibilities, not only for me but for my family as well. That was a big thing in my decision-making, as far as the team I wanted to go to. Dallas pretty much has everything that you can look for, being a family-man. If you want to get out and go around town, there’s never a dull moment where there’s nothing to do around here.”

And he’s already looking forward to the season opener in New York. Asked which game jumps out at him on the Cowboys’ 2012 schedule and Carr quickly mentioned the matchup with the division rival Giants.

“You can’t go past the first game of the year,” he said. “That game, a Wednesday night game, going to New York and playing the defending Super Bowl champions. That game right there has a big circle around it on my calendar. That’s what we’re all looking forward to is that first game. Set the tone early and just roll from there.”

My favorite part of the article is how he's embracing the community and becoming active in charities.

What's not to like.

I have to say each day that goes by is making me more excited.

I know it's cliche and a joke, but this is feeling alot like the 05 team to me. Filled with great people and hard working guys...sans Keyshawn but he was quiet and played hard for coach parcells.

Win or lose, I love the makeup of this team early on.

No more knuckleheads. Team first guys.

Guess I am a homer again but rooting for these guys in the stadium makes it more enjoyable for me personally.

If DEz Bryant grows up this year this will be a great year.

Unfortunately I suspect the same kind of season as 05 this year but its back to building around good guys so it has purpose.

Hopefully I didn't just jinx the team and Spencer kills someone in a bar or something.

The only idiot we have left is Dez Bryant, as far as I know.

I think his troubles have been greatly overblown.

Ray Lewis was associated in a murder and he is revered by the league and its players

What better way is there to start the season in New York, and shut down Eli and the passing game.

I love seeing Manning make those aw shucks dumb faces. I already like the new look in our secondary.

Let's hope these new pieces added from the draft and free agency improves the defense from a year ago, which I think it will.

Is there still room for improvement? Yeah, but we are headed in the right direction.

Yep. I have to give you that one. All Dez has been doing is mall ratting it.

I still think he's a knuckle head, but he hasn't done anything really bad. I think he has a breakout season this year.

Kinda sorta, but hopefully Garrett grows as a coach and doesn't kill or totally remove those building blocks in the future, ala Wade Phillips.
