Wondering what you should know about the Cowboys' 2018 rookies? SportsDay caught up with their college coaches to bring you the latest. Here's what Kansas head coach David Beaty wants you to know about defensive end Dorance Armstrong Jr., one of Dallas' fourth-round selections. Responses edited for length and clarity.

SportsDay: What stood out when you were recruiting Dorance to Kansas?

Beaty: Dorance didn't have a lot of weight when he signed, about 212 pounds, but he had length and explosiveness. He kind of looked like a forward on basketball team - a good-looking, long kid but you could tell he had a lot of frame to put weight on.

What changed during 2016, his 10-sack breakout year?

Beaty: His body really transformed that year from 220, 225 in the offseason to 240+ and he didn't lose a step. He's still chiseled but looked like a manchild and really developed the use of his hands.

The anomaly is he went from 10 sacks to 2 from 2016 to 2017. The good news is they didnt trade picks to move up and draft him. The bad news is when the Cowboys think they stole someone I get more Wiley Coyote visions. Bottom line though is I am willing to take chances on pass rushers round 4 of the draft. I just hope they find his optimal playing weight.

I'm sure playing most of the season on a partially torn ACL had nothing to do it with it though, right?

JMHO.

This pick reminds me of Erik Walden, our 6th round pick in 2008.

Of course Dorance far better prospect than Eric, but both had far better previous stats than the last.

Due to injuries in 2008, we could not hold Eric and he was picked up by KC. he continued to have 10 years career and in 2016 he managed to have 11 sacks for IND.

Not that bad for a late 6th rounder.

Now as for Dorance there are good reasons why Cowboys really like him in 3rd round, and thrilled getting him in 4th.

Ninerswire had him as 49ers 2nd round pick.

Projected to come off the big board in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft, Dorance Armstrong Jr., standing 6-foot-4 and weighing in at 245 pounds, is an absolute beast! Mostly covered by two blockers on most downs, Armstrong’s numbers don’t indicate the type of player he really is on the football field.

A lot of draft analysis had him as 2nd day prospect.

As for having bad stats in 2017 compared to 2016.

Armstrong was unable to build off his strong 2016 as he only logged 2 sacks on the season. The perception about him changed throughout the 2017 season as he was unable to sustain the level of success he had as a pass rusher his 1st 2 years at Kansas. But often with player evaluation there is more to the story than just stats and perception, as perception is not always reality; added responsibilities and a willingness on Armstrong’s part to forgo individual stats for the betterment of the team led to a drop off in sacks and pressures but it force him to speed up his overall development and in turn made him a better overall player and prospect. There was tangible evidence that this move was a positive one for the Jayhawks defense as the change in responsibilities led to them allowing 64 fewer rushing yards per game and a yard less per carry over what they allowed in the 2016 season.

Armstrong logged 718 snaps during the 2017 season (359 pass rushing snaps and 359 defensive run snaps), proving that he can be more than just a specialist, the 359 run snaps were 3rd most in the group. His 10.6 run stop perception was tied for 6th in the class; the 38 run stops that he accumulated throughout the season was 2nd best in the class, missing only 4 tackles on the year.
