Jets to place Quincy Enunwa on IR with neck injury

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- New York Jets wide receiver Quincy Enunwa, who aggravated a neck injury Saturday night in a practice at MetLife Stadium, will be placed on injured reserve.

Jets coach Todd Bowles said Monday that Enunwa has a bulging disk in his neck and is expected to be sidelined for six to nine months. Enunwa will get a second opinion but it is likely he will undergo surgery, Bowles said.

Bowles said he didn't believe the injury was a threat to Enunwa's career.

A source confirmed that Enunwa will miss the entire season, as the NFL Network first reported. This is a significant setback for the Jets' receiving corps, already the most inexperienced position on the team.

Enunwa was slated to be their No. 1 receiver and leader of the group. He led the Jets last season with 857 receiving yards on 58 catches.

On Saturday night, Enunwa dropped a pass from Christian Hackenberg during 7-on-7 drills when he took a step and fell to the turf face-first despite being untouched. He got up slowly, then crumpled to the ground and stayed down for several minutes.

Their top receiver is Robby Anderson, who caught 42 passes for 587 yards and two touchdowns as a rookie in 2016.
Enunwa's 80 career receptions ranks him first among wide receivers on the Jets' current roster. Marquess Wilson is next with 56, followed by Anderson (42).

"Our young guys are just going to have to grow up fast," Bowles said Monday.

Enunwa sat out the June minicamp with a similar neck injury.
