Jul 3: Former Cowboy the late Jethro Pugh (DT: 1965-78) was born on this day in 1944. He died on Jan 7, 2015; he was 70. What was Pugh's nickname? Who gave it to him? Why was he called that?

I only ever heard "Buzz Pugh" on the radio and in some radio spots, but don't know what it is or what it means.

I also remember the play in the Ice Bowl where GB double-teamed him for the QB sneak Bart Starr scored on, to end the game. I also remember he would come out of nowhere when you least expected it, with a sack or a stop when we most needed it.

I admit it, I cheated.
He earned the nickname Buzzard with the Cowboys, which was shortened to Buzz through the years.
“When he came in he was taller than I was and so lanky,’’ Lilly said. “We had names for everyone back then and we called him Buzzard because he had a big, old buzzard neck. I called him Buzz.’’

Welp, playing next to Bob Lilly who commanded a lot of double teams certainly helped Jethro over the years but he didnt get 95.5 sacks by accident. He would get a lot more accolades playing now a days.
