As the beginning of the NFL's new league year inches closer, with teams able to officially make trades on March 9, the Chicago Bears have actively started seeking a trade partner for quarterback Jay Cutler, Jeff Darlington of ESPN.com reports. This according to multiple league sources.

Teams around the league are now aware of Cutler's availability while the Bears attempt to garner draft compensation for their eight-year starter, and conversations are expected to heat up during next week's NFL scouting combine.

It is not a surprise that Cutler's future in Chicago is in question -- but the start of official trade talks is a major step in that process.

While Cutler's contract does not include a no-trade clause, there remains a widespread belief that a deal will require both Cutler and the Bears to agree on the suitor. Cutler, 33, has little incentive to play for a noncompetitive team given the lack of any guaranteed money in his current contract, sources with NFL teams privy to the details said.

Cutler clearly has his issues but I could see him excelling in Kyle Shanahan's offense in San Francisco.

Then again, I don't know the dynamic between Mike Shanahan and Cutler when they were in Denver.

The Chicago Bears are trying to trade quarterback Jay Cutler. If they do and he is unhappy with the team he lands with, Cutler might consider retirement, Chris Wesseling of NFL.com reports.

"He's one of several veterans who are still considering whether they want to play, whether they want to not play, retire, walk away," NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport explained on Wednesday's edition of NFL Total Access. "A lot of things in play here for Jay Cutler."

The other veteran quarterbacks Rapoport alluded to are Carson Palmer, Ben Roethlisberger and Tony Romo, all of whom have contemplated retirement since the end of the 2016 season.

If Cutler is presented with a starting job on the right team at the right price, he will be under center in Week 1. If his best option is to compete for playing time and guaranteed money in a tailspinning organization, motivation will naturally become a major factor in his decision-making process.
