Sources: Cowboys uncertain Jason Witten will play vs. Falcons

Ed Werder, ESPN NFL Insider

Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten is receiving treatment for two sprained ankles and a sprained knee, and it is not certain he will be available for Sunday's home game against the Atlanta Falcons, league sources told ESPN.

"[Witten] will be day-to-day all week, but he's not a lock [to play] at this point," a source said.

Witten insisted he was fine after Sunday's victory over the Philadelphia Eagles, referring to the injuries as "typical football stuff."

Witten, who is known for his high pain tolerance, missed one game early in his career with a broken jaw. He also insisted on playing in this year's season opener against the New York Giants after rupturing his spleen in the preseason.

Witten's 133 consecutive starts rank first among active NFL tight ends, and only Houston Texans punter Shane Lechler (208) has played in more consecutive games than the 189 straight he has appeared in for the Cowboys, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

The Cowboys will be without quarterback Tony Romo and wide receiver Dez Bryant, both of whom have long-term injuries that challenge Dallas' coaching staff to create offense and score points.

ESPN Cowboys reporter Todd Archer contributed to this report.I

He is only out one game with a broken jaw! No shit he has a high tolerance for pain!

I can't see him missing the game and ending his streak. I see him probably starting the game with limited playing time to keep his streak alive

This weekend I finally watched that Frontline special on post-concussion syndrome. First player I thought of was Witten.

Hate to be a Debbie Downer.

Every single one of our big name players would be out if Whitten goes down lol

And yet we find a way to win (so far)

When did Whitten sprain both ankles and his knee? Was it in practice this week or in the Philly game?

It's WITTEN. There is no 'h' in his name.

The Cowboy app hasn't mention one word about Witten being out or even injured for that matter! Maybe they are expecting Witten to just be Witten and be able to play thru it.

Dude played in the wrong era. He'd be more at home in the 30s, leather helmets and very little padding.

I was thinking similarly. I could easily see him playing with the likes of Ditka and Butkis.
