OXNARD, Calif. — Jerry Jones has undergone hip replacement surgery but it won’t keep the Cowboys owner away from training camp.
Jones will speak at the club’s state of the union address Wednesday afternoon eight days after having his left hip replaced. Jones has told friends and associates he feels great and the surgery shouldn’t hinder his routine during camp.
“He wants to be here to babysit Garrett, so we won’t start the press conference on Wednesday without him,’’ said Rich Dalrymple, the team’s vice president of public relations. “We never do.
“I don’t know that I’ve ever seen him more excited and energetic about the start of training camp in a long time. That’s actually saying a lot if you know Jerry.’’
The hip has bothered Jones for the past year and had grown progressively worse. There were times he limped noticeably in public — it was especially bad during the Cowboys regular season game in London in November — but declined to say what was wrong.
Jones made the decision two months ago to schedule the surgery. The procedure was performed last Tuesday and he spent the evening in the hospital before going home. Jones decided to spend the night in the hospital again on Saturday so he could begin his rehabilitation early Sunday morning.
“He has been mobile and walking comfortably for the past few days,’’ Dalrymple said. “His recent hospital visit was routine and part of a rehab program that will continue for the next several days.’’
This isn’t the first time Jones has had surgery before the start of training camp. He had rotator cuff surgery on his right shoulder in the summer of 2010 to address a issue that had bothered him since his freshman year in high school. He missed one day of work.
The 72-year-old owner won’t miss any days as this camp gets underway. Jones will arrive in Oxnard on Tuesday and won’t need a cane to get off the plane or take the podium during Wednesday’s news conference. Dalrymple said Jones is so pleased with the surgery and his rehab that he’s exploring the possibility of having his right hip replaced before the start of next season.
