'We're No. 1' not simply an opinion for Packers fans

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- If a Green Bay Packers fan says they are part of the NFL's best fan base, it's not opinion. It's a fact.
According to a study by Forbes that ranked all 32 NFL team fan bases on a set of five criteria, the Packers came in at No. 1.
A combination of hometown crowd reach, three years of television ratings, three years of home game attendance (percentage of capacity reached), three years of merchandise sales and social media reach all combined to make the final rankings.
The Packers topped the list in three of the five categories and were no lower than seventh in any area.
Forbes used Nielsen Scarborough research as part of their data collection.
Rounding out the top five in order were fan bases of the Denver Broncos, New Orleans Saints, New England Patriots and Baltimore Ravens.
The study concluded that 84 percent of adults in Green Bay qualified as Packers fans. That meant they have either watched, attended or listened to a game in the past year.
There's no smaller NFL market than Green Bay, which has a metro population of 306,251. However, with 4.4 million Facebook fans and 701,000 Twitter followers, it's clear that there are Packers fans in locations well beyond just the home city.
