Took in the North workout at Senior Bowl workouts today. A few things stood out:

+ Oregon State defensive tackle Stephen Paea is a mauler. Paea tossed about a series of blockers during one-one-one drills. The noteworthy point is that Paea weighed in at only 295 pounds. He was listed at 311 during the season.

+ Nevada's Colin Kaepernick has, by far, the strongest arm of his side's quarterbacks. Washington's Jake Locker and Wisconsin's Ricky Stanzi paled in comparison.

+ Nebraska running back Roy Helu Jr. had several good runs in which he showed good acceleration and moves.

+ The Cincnnati Bengals staff is in charge of the North team. Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer, formerly with the Cowboys, is giving it a full effort. The majority of these players will be drafted by clubs other than the Bengals, but Zimmer is giving each player the full benefit of his knowledge and teaching skills.

Missed the South team because it worked out at the same time on the other side of Mobile, Ala. Both clubs will work out at the same facility, at separate times, on Tuesday.

Jake Locker's stock must be plummeting right now. From top 5 selection to like 4th round QB.

2011 NFL Draft Stock Up: Senior Bowl Day 1 Practice

Vincent Brown, WR, San Diego
Vincent Brown showed off his great hands Monday, making several impressive catches. Brown averaged 19.6 yards per reception this year. He might draw some late Round 3 consideration.

Kendric Burney, CB, North Carolina
One of the more impressive cornerbacks on Monday was Kendric Burney, who was very sharp in one-on-one drills.

Quinton Carter, FS, Oklahoma
I really liked how Quinton Carter looked in coverage. Mike Mayock agreed, commenting on Carter's fluid hips. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Titus Young, WR, Boise State
Wow. I don't want to overreact to one day of practice, but it's going to be difficult not to. Titus Young was breath-taking on the practice field, blowing by defensive backs at will and breaking ankles with deadly jukes. He looks like a hybrid between DeSean Jackson and Mike Wallace.

2011 NFL Draft Stock Down: Senior Bowl Day 1 Practice

Jeremy Beal, DE/OLB, Oklahoma
Jeremy Beal had no answer for Gabe Carimi in their one-on-one matchup. Several scouts were down on Beal going into the Senior Bowl, and the Oklahoma pass-rusher is not off to a good start.

Mark Herzlich, OLB, Boston College
Mark Herzlich looked great at the weigh-in, but was very slow in coverage. I'm rooting for Herzlich, but he struggled Monday.

Ryan Kerrigan, DE, Purdue
Ryan Kerrigan beat Nate Solder on an inside move in their one-on-one matchup. Kerrigan still has some growing to do (6-4, 255), but seems like a Jaguars-type player, so I doubt he makes it past No. 16.

Stephen Schilling, G, Michigan
Stephen Schilling drew a tough matchup against Cameron Jordan, but Jordan made the Michigan guard look like a helpless child in their one-on-one battle.

Sounds good about Quinton Carter. Would be perfect in the 2nd round. What do you say to that Bonecrusher?? Not too shabby for a player who you said disgraced the memory of Barry Switzer and the wishbone offense, eh?

I like Carter at #40. He's the physical, versatile safety Ryan's defense needs.

Tuesday morning at the Senior Bowl

Gerry Fraley / Reporter

Some impressions from the North workout this morning at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala.:

+ Wisconsin tackle Gabe Carimi, a first-round candidate, worked out at guard and did well. Carimi considers himself first and foremost a tackle but is willing to play guard if that helps his draft status.

+ In one-on-one pass-rush drills, no one fared well against Cal defensive end Camerom Jordan. He did not go against Colorado tackle Nate Solder. That would be a seismic matchup.

+ Lee Smith, a tight end from Marshall, is a powerful blocker. Smith ran over a series of linebackers in drills. According to Senior Bowl measurements, Smith is 6 feet 51/2 and 269 pounds.

+ Biggest mismatch of the day: Nebraska running back Roy Helu Jr. trying to block Stanford nose tackle Fua Sione. He made the most of a 91-pound advantage and ran over Helu.

+ The offense ran some ``Wildcat'' play, with Oklahoma's DeMarco Murray taking the direct snap.

Senior Bowl observations: Another pass-catching tight end from Tennessee

Gerry Fraley / Reporter

Some observations from the South workout this afternoon at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala.:

+ Tennessee may have produced another tight end along the lines of Dallas Cowboys All-Pro selection Jason Witten. Luke Stocker has several strong catches in traffic during the workout. Stocker was measured at 6 feet 4 and 255 pounds.

+ The Tarrant County quarterbacks -- Greg McElroy (Alabama) of Southlake Carroll; Christian Ponder (Florida State) of Colleyville Heritage and Andy Dalton (TCU) -- had mixed success. McElroy and Dalton were on target early but slipped late in the practice. Ponder was wild high early but made several good deep throws. McElroy also had a good deep throw, to Greg Salas (Hawaii) in the final segment of practice.

+ DeMarcus Love (Arkansas) of Dallas Carter moved from offensive tackle to guard.

+ Highly rated offensive tackle Derek Sherrod (Mississippi State) dominated end Sam Acho (Texas) in a pass-rush drill but had trouble with the speed and moves of linebacker Von MIller (Texas A&M).

+ When it comes to weights, running back Noel Devine (West Virginia) was the biggest fibber. Devine, who briefly lived in Prosper, Texas, weighed in at 160 pounds, 20 pounds less than his listed weight.

Senior Bowl observations: A&M's Miller a standout

Gerry Fraley / Reporter

Some observations from today's two workouts at the Senior Bowl at Mobile, Ala.:

+ Texas A&M linebacker Von Miller has gone full speed since he hit the field on Monday. Miller has had the best series of practices of all players. He has been particularly good in pass-rush drills, but a word of caution there. The South offensive line is less than stout.

+ Michigan State's Greg Jones is the North's version of Miller. Jones runs well and has stayed with backs and tight ends in pass coverage.

+ It appears that Abilene Christian wide receiver Edmond Gates will miss out on a prime opportunity. Gates missed his second consecutive practice after aggravating a previous hamstring injury. West Virginia's Jock Sanders replaced Gates.

+ After a slow start, Boise State wide receiver Austin Pettis has made a series of superb catches. His Boise teammate, Titus Young, is the fastest receiver in the game. Young is a lightweight at 174 pounds, but he has shown no fear when it comes to running across the middle on pass routes.

+ Oklahoma running back DeMarco Murray has had a good week of practice. Murray showed he can block by handling Oregon linebacker Casey Matthews in a one-on-one drill.
